are the refurbished phones really a good deal? Do they work as well as a new phone would? I ask because it's my first purchase of a cell phone, excuse the newbie!

I don't have any experience with refurbished phones, but I've
bought a bunch of refurbished products (computers from HP, etc.).
In every case, the refurb product has matched or exceeded
my expectations for a new product.

Others have had different experiences, to the point that
some swear they will never buy a refurb again, for anyone,
      for any type of product.

If I were to buy a refurb phone, I would expect it to perform
exactly the same functions as the same model phone would if
new. When I buy a refurb, I balance the price savings against
the warranty (refurbs often have a shorter warranty than the
same product new), and figure out my personal value for a
refurb with possible cosmetic imperfections vs. new.

Some refurb products are incredible deals. Some are almost
the same price as a new item.

If you're new to cell phones, and new to cell phones, you
have a lot of thinkin' to do.

Thanks a lot for your response. It's much appreciated! I guess what I'll do is go to at@t and check out the cell phones. You made a good point, about warranties and imperfections and it's not like I don't have the money anyway. I may as well go new at any rate, since I can get a good deal here at Ben's on what I see and like at the store.

Just a warning, No. 1: Be very cautious about signing up with AT&T. Not only is their prepaid plan expensive, but their customer service gets low ratings from Consumer Reports. If T-Mobile has decent coverage where you live and travel, I'd recommend going with them, as they're much cheaper and, at least in my experience, vastly easier to deal with. You might also want to review the comments made on Ben's when "deals" have been offered on refurbished AT&T phones in the past. These typically turn up here every couple of days and are always available on the AT&T web site, so don't look at this as anything special that you ought to jump on. Take your time.
