NewEgg.com has the new LG GH22NP20 22x DVD+-RW Drive for $24 with free shipping. A user review indicates that it will burn at 22x with Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media. It also supports speedy 16X DVD+R DL burning for those who need the DL capacity.

FYI a few people mentioned this will not burn DVD-R media.

    #1

Specs. say it supports DVD-R writing.
Probably a few douche bags that don't know what they are doing.
...or some cheap ass new media that is not supported. A firmware update would probably fix that.

I don't know if my experience with LG is normal, but I've had a high defective rate from them. I won't even look at their drive any more.

Seems like the defect rate is hit or miss. #2 you don't know what you are talking about. If multiple people complain that they can't write DVD-R media I'll take their word for it. It's plausible that a firmware will fix it, but I don't see you spitting out a link to the site with that fix listed either. So basically your assumptions make you look like a bag yourself.

So #3 what drive would you recommend?

#4, the last four drives I've purchased were all Samsung, and I haven't had a defective in them. I also hear they are pretty good drives too.

As for #2's comment about firmware, I've tried to update firmware for an LG drive, and it can be difficult to impossible. LG offers little to no support for their drives. When they release firmware, many times it won't work.

That's good to know #5 and is enough for me not to buy one of their drives. Thanks.

Can't go wrong with Samsung, NEC, or Sony. And I'd be leery of any drive that requires firmware flashing. Instant warranty voider.

I have 2 LG optical drives in my computer (a regular DVD ROM and a DVD multi burner) and both work great - going strong for almost 2 years now.

#5 awe your to cute. "difficult to impossible". You sound like my 4 year old who said last week, its impossible to ride a bike with 2 wheels. Don't worry, I won't laugh at you though, if not for folks like you, i'd be out of a job and the wifey wouldn't have her stupid new bmw's every year.

#9, #9, #9. I have seen LG drives that will not update either when I knew for sure it was the right one. Only problem now is during your laughter you got pushed down the basement stairs. Now you are a mouth breather like Captain Pike.
