hated it! horrible range, and couldnt get it to connect to a linksys g adapter. I tried this one, the dlink and still have the Belkin N1. They all suck, wait till it becomes official then go for N.

i used to have faith on linksys products...'til my last wireless router. terrible range, drop connection so often. even my substitute cheapo s robotics wireless router works better than that. no more linksys, that's it.

Linksys is crap. Lately I've been very impressed by Netgear's routers, they're very fast and have tremendous range, and they're not too expensive. Unfortunately, no open source firmware alternative for them, but the best open source firmware replacement can only do so much to improve crap hardware.

I agree w/ #4. I think out of the high end G routers, the Rangemax is the best. Just overloaded w/ features, and great performance all around. Linksys is more for novice users who need ease of use and simplicity.

However, I'm a little curious if this can really be as fast as it claims... 12x of a wired router in regards to what?

#6, it says 12x speed of Wireless-G. Maximum possible bandwidth should be greater than 100 MBit wired, but I don't think it is as fast as 1 GBit.

#7... yeah, you've sort of got it. Unfortunately it's kind of a misunderstanding of the OSI model to compare wireless technologies and the Ethernet standard. They're two separate yet related things.

There is a beta version of DD-WRT for this model I believe. Somebody try it and let us know since it sounds like you can't do worse than the Linksys firmware.

I was with you until #4 said that Netgear's routers are good, now I don't know which way is up. I shudder to think of that Netgear G router I had. It was really bad. Currently I amusing a buffalo with DD-WRT, and am very pleased.

ditto, #11. netgear g routers are crap. i had a flaky wgr614. replaced it with a linksys wrt54gl. recently patched it to dd-wrt and am very pleased.

I had a 1st generation WGR614 that rocked. The subsequent hardware/firmware releases got worse and worse and were pretty universally panned. I replaced it by a WRT54Gv4 and installed HyperWRT on it. The damn thing was never that fast to begin with but it could never stay up for more than a couple of days at a time (my network is busy), and the range sucked (it didn't cover parts of my house). I got a Netgear Rangemax Mimo WPN824 from Woot during the last woot-off, and was surprised to find an extremely stable, responsive, competent router with excellent range (I get 80% signal throughout my entire house). So, I don't think you can judge current Netgear routers just on the base of a couple of bad models. Then again, I suppose the same applies to Linksys. But it's fair to say that the WPN824 trounces the WRT54xx line in every respect, except that it doesn't run open source firmware so if you need less common features like WDS for instance you're SOL.

WDS is an inexpensive cure for many people's range issues. A few cheap Buffalo WHR-G54Ss and DD-WRT. Does HyperWRT or the other 3rd party firmwares (other than dd-wrt) support WDS. Anyone had success with them?
