Buy.com has the basic but solid Linksys WRT54G 802.11g Wireless Router for $52 - $10 off using Google Checkout - $15 rebate [Exp 11/9] = $27 with free shipping. This is a tried and true router. [BizRate]
Apparently the more recent versions are not built with the same parts as the older revs. and have really gone down hill. I gave up and switched to Buffalo and my throughput is substantially better in my house. Other (IT) people have told me that the D-Link units are more reliable than the Linksys ones.
It is generally a good router, but sometimes I have problems with the WRT54G and WRT54GS (with booster) with no connection. I couldn't find out what's the real problem. By pulling out and in the cable, it solved the problems 9 out of 10 time. It is kinda annoying when it get too many time in one day.
I've found linksys routers to be very reliable and much more user friendly than d-iink. One of my linksys routers has been running strong now for over six years.
The older revisions of this router are great, have one running the linux Sveasoft firmware right now. May switch to DD-WRT soon. The newer revisions of this router are crippled with less ram and vxworks os instead of linux.
There are getting cheaper and cheaper. I updated the firmware, and installed it at my sister's place, and it's worked just fine for over 6 months now. Easy setup too.
You actually can put a stripped down version of DD-WRT on the latest WRT54GS and the WRT54G v5 and v6. There's a new WRT54G v7 which probably won't work with any DD-WRT, however.
I'd suggest ditching Linksys entirely and moving to the Buffalo WHR-G54S: $34 with Google Checkout, no rebates, better hardware than even the "classic" WRT54G. Based on my own testing the Buffalo has identical range to the Linksys despite its single antenna.
Of course, there are even better routers out there, like the Asus WL-500g, if you're willing to drop some more cash.
got this router. it's solid. Also have a d-link. signal quality is okay and options are really limited. If you want basic, go w/ d-link for a really cheap price (practically free). Otherwise, i'd say get the linksys and $27 is pretty decent price for this router
I have always had good luck with Linksys Routers, you can't go wrong with this price
I once got 3 faulty linksys routers in a row (from BestBuy), I suggest D-Link for routers, it's generally cheaper and doesn't break.

The last linksys router I had broke after a little more than 1 year of use. However, to be fair, I usually maxed out the bandwith most of that time.
I have never had a problem with the WRT54G. Good deal!

I've had great luck with this router.no problems here.I highly recommend it.
#4 how did u go about maxing it for a year? college lan sharin files or somethin?
I wouldn't get this. Get the WRT54G-S or linux version so you can put aftermarket firmware on it. More controls and features.
linksys is suck!
I have one of these routers and it's definitely tops! It's the first one I ever owned and it has worked super good.
mimo has better signal.
This router kick dlink's @ss any time, rock solid stable, even with extreme bandwidth and connection loads.

I love this router. I can play all my games and use VOIP with NO problems.

if you need more info, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrt54g
btw, you have about the next 24 minutes to buy in before google checkout is dead.
I've been pretty satisfied with this router. I've played with the alternate firmware as well. I'd recommend this.
