I disagree. I've had both and have had to reboot my D-link more often that this one (which I am using now). Admin on both are pretty vanilla (equal) Also, the IT people where I work recommend Linksys over D-Link.
No way #1. I've been using this for about 10 months and have had zero problems. Just be careful when you flash the firmware with one that is not from Linksys. It can cause it to act a little quirky. Otherwise this router has been awesome. That is with 1 desktop, 1 printer and 2 laptops using the netowrk
I've been using my Linksys 802.11b router for over 6 years now (I got it when wireless routers just came out) and haven't had any problems with it. Linksys is very reliable and extremely easy to set up.
I've never used the Linksys router. But the one, D-Link I have has been perfect in the past three years. The core chips inside D-Link routers are made by Marvell whose major competitor, Broadcom making the chips inside Linksys(Cisco). Both should be OK.
#6, it depends on the router. A lot of dlink routers, especially the older 'G' ones use atheros chipsets. Linksys varies some too, with some people saying that the v7 of this router also uses atheros.
This router sucks-Period! I bought one for a family member cause it was on sale and its 'simple' for my old aunt. The throughput eats. I took my D-link DGL-4300 over and swapped it in to see the through put difference to a WIRED connection and G wireless connection and it was substantailly more. Then i bought a netgear and its also more! DEver since they left the broadcom chip and have that new smaller firmware its @$$. You need to get the WRT54GL and run some DD-WRT firmware if you want something a lot better. Or wait, i hear at revision 8 in the next waurter they are going back to the Broadcom setup.
#7, v7 of this router does indeed use the Atheros chipset. Also, v2.2 through v6 all used some form of Broadcom. See <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrt54g>
I've had this router for ~2 years. I've flashed it with about 5 firmwares (one of them being directly from Linksys, the rest third party). Two of these firmwares prevented the router from booting, but it's relatively easy to re-flash if you're wired to it.
Been playing CS:S on this for several months without problems. I connected to it wirelessly and get ~30 latency, whereas my roommate gets ~5 latency (usually unheard of)! "Firmware Version : v4.30.1, HyperWRT 2.1b1 +tofu13c" since August (on 24/7). No freezes or problems yet! I've had 5 people with different wireless adapters connect to it (with and without WEP), and all worked. Because of this new firmware, I've been able to connect via Telnet to the router to pointlessly issue Linux commands, and have increased the wireless signal strength. I highly recommend this router, though I've never had experience with D-Link.
After about a year, my linksys would required me to hit the reset button several times a day just to get a wireless connection. The longest it would work was an hour at a time best case.
Do we know which version of the WRT54G this unit is ? When I go to linksys.com, I see several versions: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 2.2, all the way up to 0 I want to download the correct manual to make sure I won't have the same problem I'm having now. My current linksys is router model BEFSR41. Sure enough, it says in the manual that unless you have the wan interface statically assigned, port forwarding will not work. When I statically configure my wan interface, my internet connection works fine for three days or so, then breaks. To fix it, I let it dynamically assign the address, then go back to static, works for three days again, then breaks....etc. Strange and crappy.
Don't know what happened to my last post. Supposed to say that several versions of this hardware model are listed on linksys.com including versions 1 through 6. "Cherub22", WTF ? How'd that get in my text ?
Go D-Link if you can they run more reliable and games tend to work easier.

How do games "work easier"?

This is not the "L" version so be cautious of which non-Linksys firmwares you try to use.

#7, thanks for the info. I'd definitely prefer the MRVL or BRCM inside.

I've heard that there are problems with this router for torrent dls. Is that true for all versions of this router?

my linksis routers lasted one year and died.
maybe it's just me, but I don't get linksys anymore

I've had a linksys WRT54G v.5 for over a year now with no problems. Just yesterday I flashed it with DD-WRT Micro and it works better than ever!
These are solid wireless routers. BUT, N wireless is too close, these will drop in price very soon. $30 is not bad thou.
