"Tried and true" router that needs a reboot every few days. I am in a process of flashing it with dd-wrt firmware. Mayber this will help.

I have the GL version, and could not be happier. I have every port filled and a variety of wireless devices connected, and I've rarely had a hiccup. Leagues better than my previous router. Highly recommended, but maybe worth the extra dough for the GL.

I've got a Linksys wireless G router with 4-port switch and have no problems with it. I have had to reboot it a couple of times but not on a regular basis.

install dd-wrt, and set it to reboot everyday at 5am, then never have to worry about it again.

They've come out with something like 10-15 different revs of this router over the years - I could be exaggerating. With each new rev, they suck more.

One of the more recent revs did away with removable antennae!

Despite that, I have a rev 2.0 (about 5-6 yrs old) and love it.

iirc, only the GL version can be updated to DD-WRT firmware, not the G version that's advertised. is that correct?

#10 I believe that is correct depending on the rev #. Way back the G could be hacked to run various Linux firmwares. Then do to cost reduction the amount of memory and other components were changed to run a non-Linux software with less hardware requirements. Customers bitched so they came out with the GL with the L indicating Linux compatibility. They cost more as well. From what I've read the G version sucks, the GL is good especially after using one of the many popular firmware hacks. Buffalo also makes a number of routers that run the same Linux hacks.

Yeah, the G version up until v3 (included) was great. I used to have a v4 which was officially supported by HyperWRT but it sucked. v5 and later officially suck balls (not enough flash and ram, apparently) so stay away unless you can look at the box and make sure which hardware version you're getting. Oh, and it's worthless if you're not planning on reflashing it because the Linksys firmware is baconnaise (doesn't even do basic stuff like MAC-based address assignment for DHCP)

My WRT54G 1.0 died around 6 months ago. Replaced with a WRT54G v8.0 and with firmware v05 it works just fine. Never need to reboot it.
