OfficeDepot.com has the basic but solid Linksys WRT54G 802.11g Wireless Router for $40, with free shipping on $50 orders. This is a tried and true router for those who don't want to fuss with X2 X3 MIMO N hype. [BizRate]

This router has the ability to bridge with other wireless routers. Great for extending wireless connectivity and eliminating wires!

I got an earlier hackable version. If you want the one that will run 3rd party firmware you may need to go the ebay route.

I also am looking for a cheaper option to run DD-WRT on. Since the Buffalo routers are next to impossible to get now I don't know what the cheapest option is these days.

You want the WRT54GL version for easiest hacking, the L = linux.

I have this one and It's one of the best routers ever. It has been running w/out reboot for over a year.

My friend just bought a belkin N router and wirless card. the wireless card sucks big time. We have not been too impressed with N. But does anyone else care to weigh in?

Netgear sucks too. We had a WPN824 and what a POS! Nothing but issues: disconnects, inability of clients to make initial connection and eventually just stopped working altogether.

This guy is solid. I've been meaning to hack mine with DD-WRT for a while but it works so well as is that I don't want to mess with it. #9 is correct that if you want to hack the newer versions you should buy the L model. They're more expensive though - 50 or 60.

Agreed that this is a great router, it keeps holding its value and doesn't go down in price much because of its reliability and performance. I've since upgraded to a Trendnet Gigabit N (TEW-633GR) and haven't looked back - it is better in every way.

I think they are up to version 8. I have one and you can use DD-WRT on it (the micro version because it only has 2MB of memory). For me the router worked for about a year or so without any problems but now I have to restart it almost every day. I am looking for a cheap router as a backup so I can flash Linksys with DD-WRT.

#17, the reason why this one goes for so much is because it is easily hackable to run Linux (see the DD-WRT), which I believe the flash would give it VPN capabilities and much more.

I was fortunate enough, just yesterday, to get a V1 WRT-54GS for like $20 from a guy at work. Flashed it with the full DD-WRT and voila. Nothing quirky about the flash, nor the operation, and the dude in Puerto Rico that keeps trying to hack me because I hurt his feelings can go F himself now. A shame that they reduced the flash size on these. The full version of DD-WRT rules.
