good write up ben, this will fit the bill for 90% of wifi users out there anyways...linksys and netgear are my two preferred brands.
Walk into Staples and pick one of these up for $45 without any coupons or anything like me. And if you don't live near a Staples, then you oughtta move, cuz they're friggin everywhere.
This is an awesome router, you can even hack it with firmware. When did Ritz start selling routers?
when they couldn't sell cameras
If you want to install the 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt then you should buy the wrt-54gl.

Great router! The QOS is good for sharing an internet connection with an apt
There's been cheaper deals on this in the past.
I've got a Quake III server running on one of these.
There was another Linksys router with the card yesterday for $5 from Compusa...
Great router, but bad deal. This is regularly 50 at bestbuy (I've bought 2 for under 50 in the last 3 years). Not worth risking the rebate for potential 3 dollar gain.
It may have been a black friday weekend deal, but I got a $15 bestbuy gift card when I bought this for 50 last week.
Edit: weird, just check their website, and they jacked it up to 70
the linksys router with the card was way worse than this one, btw.
good product. . .prolly more of these in people's houses than any other wireless router. you may not even need one. turn your wireless card on. . bet someone around ya has one and doesnt know to secure it.
#2, there's no Staples near me, but I'm not about to move. Staples isn't doing their job if they don't have a store on every street corner, a la Starbucks.
Decent enough router, but for the extra memory and ability to load alternate firmware, I prefer the WRT54GL.
I was looking for a good deal on a WRT54GL bacon's got WPA2
I came across this rebate from pricegrabber in case anyone cares...
$15 Rebate
Rebate form for PC Mall, Gateway Systems, CDW.com, Dell.com, PC Connection, Insight, Global Computer, Zones, HP Home & Home Office Store, LENOVO
No loading of dd-wrt on this puppy, it's got less ram than prior versions.
This is a very good router. Signal is strong & easy to setup. Have been using it for over 2 years without any problem.
For people interested in hacking the router:
1) Hacking this model isn't officially supported. While it's much easier than older versions of this model (v5-v6), it still isn't as easy as WRT54GL.
2) Once hacked, it can still only run the micro version of DD-WRT (because it has less RAM than the WRT54GL), so many features are missing. They've got details on their page about what micro is missing.
.. so for hacking, probably just worth spending the extra 10 bucks to get the WRT54GL.
However, this router serves well as a WDS node (plunk a bunch of these all over your Hollywood mansion, distributes wireless signal), and you save yourself $10 per WDS node
$17 - right about WDS. You could get some directional antennas and do a DIY WISP in your neighborhood.
The firmware that came with the v5 was junk - hopefully they've got it working a bit better now.
IMHO, too much of a PITA to save $10.
Just get the WRT54GL instead. You can get it from buy.com for this same price ($47) if you use google checkout.
Anybody have any good links for large wireless networks?
