There is no need to get a wireless g router unless you are really on a budget and already have several g cards. Wireless n is really coming down in price...
#1, alternatively, there is no reason to get an N router, since there is no ISP that can provide internet service faster than a G router will handle. Unless you transfer a lot of files over your LAN, there is absolutely no reason for N. Might as well save a few bucks with the G.
refurbished + Old technology- definitely pass....
Actually I found many used WRT54g at garage sale / swap meet for less than $10. Just don't know why people still pay $25 for a refurb. But thanks to DD-wrt, so I can sell used wrt54G from swap meet at eBay and profit!
internal antennas + old tech = crap.
not even worth $5
Beg to disagree slightly. Some of the n's do give improved range and/or bandwidth b/c of higher power or antenna diplexing.
Although g is plenty fast when there is a single client and no collisions, speed/bandwidth can degrade very fast with multiple clients because g admits only one sender at a time, and ACK's (acknowledge) must be returned for each successful transmission.
In other words g 54mps is not 54mps in the real world.
Another thing, I strongly prefer detachable antennas so that you can replace the built in toy dongle wth a high gain commercial or homebrew type (to improve range and security).
I own this, reap POS, when I connect Wirelessly, it gets an IP but doesn't work until it's been connected for about 5 min, so I can't use my wireless devices for 5 min once the driver loads (Desktop, Laptop and iPhone 3G), it also just drops while using WIFI and even the Wired connections get disconnected. Upgraded the Firmware but that didn't help STAY AWAY!
I own this one and it works great. I had no need for n and wanted to replace netgear wgr614 v3 that would freeze up every time I went to google maps.
Although dd-wrt can be installed on it, only the micro version fits, which is limited in features.
I do not know why #6 has so many problems. I am using WPA2 Personal with TKIP+AES and wireless works flawlessly through 50 feet and 5 walls of my house. I had problems connecting with AES only, but as soon as I switched to TKIP+AES everything started working. I did not investigate why.
Not sure about the refurb, but I bought this new and it's working great. It being slim & antenna-free allows me to stash it behind a shelf. My desktop picks up the signal thru 2 walls and about 60 feet. My netbook gets excellent signal anywhere around the house.
