i could swear this looks like a linksys router
ridiculous that you have to buy this shite to control the ps3.
yeah they should make their remote compatible with PS3, not ask people to buy an adapter.
PS3 doesn't have voice command yet?
i have one of these things, mostly for the ability to turn on/off the ps3.
it occasionally will not turn off the ps3 or not turn it on.
every once in a while, it will lockup the bluetooth on the ps3 completely so that even the controllers do not sync without plugging them in!
working with the support team at logitech, they said to move the ir receiver at least 3 feet away. this seems to help a bit but i occasionally have problems once in a while...
#3...So you want Logitech to design their remotes using Bluetooth because Sony was stupid enough to require Bluetooth for their remotes?
Sounds like Sony should have designed their PS3 with an IR remote sensor.
I ended up just getting some $15 PS3 remote that has the USB dongle that acts as an IR sensor. Works awesome with my Logitech (except the ability to power on from the remote).
Sadly, Sony = proprietary overpriced crap and Logitech = nice, fairly high-tech crap that is cheaply made. I have owned many Logitech devices over the years and none of them seem to be designed to last more than about a year with normal usage.
The reason--I suspect--that Xbox and PS3 systems don't use infrared is so that you don't have to worry about line-of-sight. Wii-motes, btw...are...Bluetooth.
The infrared sensor (on the front) is only for reading off intensity level/direction from the so-called sensor bar (it's not a sensor bar, it's an IR array). Otherwise, Wii-motes do all the position computation onboard, and transmit the data by Bluetooth back to the console. Anyway, I digress.
The IR USB dongle that #6 uses is probably the best solution, except if you use the Logitech, it means the remote that came with the dongle goes on the pile of unused remotes.
#3 Your suggestion is not too far off...I've seen some recent universal remotes that are including RF so that you can use them in other rooms (I think secondary tuners on Dish receivers work this way). It won't control a PS3, but it means that universal remotes are expanding beyond IR control.
A much cheaper way to gain Harmony control over the PS3 is to get the Madcatz (I think it was Madcatz...) remote control for the PS3. Throw away the crappy remote but keep and use the IR receiver.
#8 I thought the 360 did have an infrared port? Correct me if I am wrong, and I don't think the Wii has much baring on this discussion. Its not really used as a media center like the other two, especially the ps3
The USB dongle solution is not really that great. Yeah its cheaper, but you get what you pay for. My experience was that they are much slower/less responsive and as stated cant power on. So yes its a little more, but this adapter supports all the functions as the official Sony bluetooth offering, is very responsive, and you can use any IR remote you want. Line of sight (this is just my opinion) is really not that important an issue for most people.
I agree that a fully compatible harmony remote would be nice, and they should make one, but that's not the point of this product. Unless you are suggesting that I should abandon my $80 remote and buy a completely different one that will probably cost twice the price. Also, this can be used with most of the other programmable remotes as well.
You point about other RF remotes is pointless. The PS3 is Bluetooth, not RF, so whats the connection?
Search for PS3IR and get either the 500 or 1000 for the best way to control a PS3 from an IR remote.
