Amazon has the refurbished Logitech Revue Companion Box with Google TV and Keyboard Controller for $80 with free shipping. Integrates with HDTV and cable or satellite system, features 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Ethernet and comes with pre-loaded apps for Netflix, Pandora and more. Tiger Direct also has it for the same price.
Can someone enlighten me -- I'm sure I'll never get this, but I *am* curious: I have DishNetwork, and understood there's something like a $5 monthly programming fee. I assume it's for the two devices to integrate more, like having the Revue be able to search your DVR content.
What I'm wondering is how the Revue works if it's not explicitly connected to the Dish receiver. I would assume I get all the normal functions (g, web browsing) just not the exclusive ones that work through Dish.
the revue connects between your stb and the tv. So all data runs thru the revue. Because of that, you can control most all features using only the revue. There is NO programming fee of any type. The entire service i free. You would not need to involve Dish. There is a setup wizard that takes care of all the programming
Thanks #2...I'm sorry, in hindsight I realize how ignorant my question looks. I already have a good idea of how the Revue works as a solo device. I guess to rephrase: what is gained by integrating the Dish receiver and the Revue? In other words, what do I "give up" by using the two devices independently? Is there any feature that makes Dish's service fee worthwhile? I suspect not.
From Dish Network's website: "$4/mo DVR integration fee will apply. DVR Integration fee enables Google TV features exclusive to DISH Network - search your DVR and Video On Demand, schedule recordings and purchase On Demand movies right from the search bar, and set-up easily with no IR blaster needed."
Basically what they're saying #1/3 is that if you don't want to use the IR blaster (which takes your remote commands and zaps them to the digital eye of your Dish DVR) and get some "exclusive features" (likely nothing of note) then it's 5 bucks a month.
Not sure what refurbing this device entails but you can get it new for $99 bucks. One review I read says you can plug it directly into your TV bypassing the cable box. The rep at Best Buy said the same thing. I played with it a bit didn't seem like a bad device even tho Logitech won't be making any more of them.
Thanks guys (I love how y'all explain things like I'm a 73-year-old grandma, but hey, without a tough-looking screen name or avatar, who's to know?). It's pretty much what I figured..."integration" basically means using the Revue keyboard to do the same things I can already do on the Dish receiver (pretty much).
I also worried at some point that without paying the service fee, the Dish receiver might somehow interfere with Revue function (remember, the Revue comes *after* the Dish box), but that's obviously not the case.
#7 is not only 100% right, but maybe even more than 100%: it wouldn't surprise me to see the new price continue to drop.
The Revue will only hook up through HDMI. If your tv has 2 HDMI ports and you use 1 of them for your set top box, you can hook up the Revue to the other port, and not have the signal from the set top box (Dish) go through the Revue. I prefer my set top box (FIOS) to go through the Revue. The new Android 3.1 update has speeded up the Revue and has some cool features, such as loading some Android apps. The Revue only has around 50 apps so far, or you can side-load any app that does not require touch screen. Side-loading requires pretty high technical knowledge of Android OS mods.
#9. Do you get any benefit going through your set top box? That was the problem I was having, trying to figure out exactly how to connect this thing. I don't use a cable box, just basic cable. But when you see the description write up it says "hook to your cable box." Yes #1, the reviews I have seen say there is a $5 dollar monthly fee for Dish. I believe it's for the DVR feature.
#11, it looks like everyone is currently out of stock of the new $99 units. They were recently available at Amazon, Newegg, and Bestbuy.Bestbuy also had the bundle with a camera for $130. I don't see any new units but they may come back in stock. Amazon has gone in and out of stock a few times.

...and don't you all trample each other to get away from Amazon to Tiger Direct to buy this refurb now!

#10, I dont go through the set top box, the Revue is hooked to the tv, the stb is hooked to the Revue.
Thanks #12, I don't get why anyone would buy this; only to surf the web on your TV? And discontinued to boot?
