So wait... for $1000, it accesses your computer (which you may have bought for <$1000) for music to play through a stereo system which you have to buy separately.
In short, you're paying $1000 because you're too lazy to bring down your laptop and hook it up to the same stereo system you have set up?
This is only for truly anal retentive audiophiles(more money than common sense). One of my friends has one and I admit the DAC in it is sweet. If you set up a room to listen to only music, store your music on lossless(FLAC is my preference) then have this to take it back to analog it does sound marginally better if you have the equipment to back it up. My friend's system cost more than both of my cars, and I don't really see the difference being worth the price. I'm no slouch with audio, Marantz sr7005 receiver with Martin Logan electrostats, ML Depth i triple 8" for Bass and velodyne DD-18 monster to shake the house, but $1000 for a good DAC? My HTPC is an i3 540 with Asus Xonar D2X card with Burr Brown DAC(claimed -118dB SNR but usually measures in the -125dB area in reviews) in a little HTPC with 6 2TB drives. Not only does it produce some stellar sound through the Marantz letting the Xonar do the work, but it stores and plays blu-ray images and anything else I can throw at it for about the same price as this waste of money.
You can't compare an internal laptop soundcard or even a soundblaster to something like this, the sound would be night and day. Going from an X-Fi titanium to the Xonar was amazing. X-FIs have pretty bad SNR and their output stage is marginal at best with fairly bad DACs. Every creative labs card I've ever tried had a fair amount of white noise hiss to it and the DACs make me want to stick screwdrivers in my ears. Using the blank track from an IASCA SQ reference CD the X-FI Ti has a noticeable hiss to it with only about 1/4 of the volume on the receiver. With the Xonar I can crank the volume all the way up on the Marantz and you can just barely hear a faint hiss. 3db is 10x louder or quieter, there is a HUGE difference between even an X-FIs crappy -112dB(usually more like -100 to -105) and something like my Xonar which is claimed -118dB(but as I said measures in the -125 to -128dB).
Good deal, I picked up 3 of them to replace some older equipment.
