I would rather build a media server for less $$.

You would never be able to get the DAC that's in this machine and properly configure it to work as well as this thing does.

In other words, if you think MP3 is the greatest thing since slice bread, this thing isn't for you.

I didn't quite get the purpose of this device either... Care to lend a link that would explain why this is better than my xbox or ipod streaming to my surround sound system? (Cheap airport express)

      #4 see my answer above.

This is a high end audiophile quality music player. Where as your ipod or xbox and some of the media players out there will play music, this will deliver the audio range and quality with a balanced output that is required for any high end a/v equipment out there.

If you are spending $25K on a stereo system that is top notch from the power cable to the speakers, you won't worry about spending $1000 for a device to deliver the digital sourced music.

right.. in other words a fool and his money will soon be parted.

I have a high end system with all the right snob-appeal name brands in it - not to satisfy such rodeo cowboy, but because they are what sounded best to me, for my needs.

I am also, however a technofile, and realize that when dealing with digital music - the *best* thing i can do is provide as little pre-processing as possible (with extremely high bitrate, or non-comopressed sourcing)and let my already very good sound processor do the work it was designed to do. ie: provide it with a low-noise line level (the likes of which a high end audio card can provide (not *gaming* creative labs baconnaise) can do - likely better than this logitech unit)- and still at half the price.

I've spent close to your arbitrarily selected budget for a high end system.. and i would *still* think twice about dropping 1k on this unit, because the value simply isn't there, and because i'm not an rodeo cowboy with more money than brains.

I paid $2000 for this only three years ago and I love the sound. The CDs have the smoothness of LPs and I have it hooked up to a VTL gear with Innersound Eros electroestatic speakers. It sound excellent. In this new generation the center knob is missing but everything else is the same. Only if you are interested in natural sound to be streamed through your high end audio system invest in this device. If you are happy with MP3 sound this might be way too much for you. It all depends on how trained your ears are and the kind of music you listen to. I listen to a lot of classical and Jazz and it's been heaven on earth the last three years. Good luck...

I bought the very first one of these when they first came out and, well, if you are happy running regular oil in it- this isn't for you. I only run full synthetic oil in it and appreciate the "pure" sound it produces.
