$999 for substandard hardware? I don't think so. These things stop working too easily for me.

Keep in mind that you don't _own_ an Apple, you're merely renting it for term of the warranty. The $250 for the extended warranty is not optional, think of it like all the taxes on your $43 "$24.99/mo unlimited" phone bill. So, if your Mac does make it past warranty, you're at best running on borrowed time, and at worst stealing from hardworking Americans.

Oh, and I believe every review that says the HDD is slow; they can't even put in a 160GB drive from an iPod? Maybe, MAYBE, when ZFS is finally delivered in 10.6, they could also sneak in a flash drive as cache to speed things up.

Seriously, though, the Air only exists to make people ooh and aah at it in a store, and then walk out with a Macbook for half the price (instead of a PC for 1/4).

I think love and hate are too strong to express my persona feeling.. I just dont really care one way or the other. Theyre pretty, though. Ill give them that.

Pen_sq, How many Americans do you think actually made this? All these notebooks are made in China or some other non-American country.

Wow, lots of jealous people that can't afford Apple hardware. Probably blew it all on malware/spyware/virus/rebuild software.

@brontide: People that get Malware/Spyware/Virus deserve them like people who burp without a condom. Don't start with that Macs are impervious to virus and errors bs I've had to work with enough malfunctioned Mac hardware to know there's no computer PC/Mac/Linux or otherwise that's impervious to anything. Remember the Titanic? That wasn't supposed to sink either.

That's funny #7. My guess is your mac is full of things you know nothing about. Here's a good article to read about the vaunted mac security:

OK, bens filter is messing with the link. The website is:

      #8, #9

So you have both personally witnessed *infected* Mac's... I didn't think so. Just more Jealousy.

If I had a nickle for every infected windows system I've touched I would have more money than Madoff.

I wonder if they honor the 10% student discount on top of this decent price. There are high end Netbooks that run in the $600 range. A $900 Mac Air would not be an unreasonable purchase in comparison to a 12" Dell 'netbook' that is of similar specs and build quality, but comes with a horrible operating system.

4200 RPM hard drive...the SSD is part of what made this interesting in the first place.

#11, you got me. I'm jealous I haven't paid double for a machine that uses parts that breaks down easily (I know, I've had to work on them), and has about 1/10th the available software for them.

I'm also jealous that I'm not brainwashed into believing my machine is secure because the 25 people that use a machine like mine haven't decided to write a virus for it yet.

Yes, you certainly are superior. I'm glad you graced us with your presence.

I would presume the dual core merom in this is significantly faster than a single core atom processor you find in a netbook. too bad you can't replace the god awfully slow 1.8" drive with any old flash drive - proprietary connectors and all.

that said, if you want the apple aesthetic, a normal macbook is only .25" thicker, has an optical drive, a bigger battery, a much faster CPU and GPU, and is probably the same price refurb. 4.6 lbs isn't too bad either

you are basically paying for the name

nothing here that is worth that price point

i also wonder if it comes with the separate drive, does it?
