Cool toy. I got a few. I give them to scout troops. They work great.
Most of them work crappy. The magnesium is much too hard to get small chips off which is a requirement for usage. Same your time; don't buy.
The description is a bit confusing. At meritline, it says
"Material : flint (magnesium), scraper (iron).
Length of magnesium flint:5 cm.
Diameter of magnesium flint:0.8cm.
Length of magnesium flint:5 cm."
Magnesium isn't flint. This looks like it is just a flint & steel.
Magnesium and flint starters look like a large silver block with a cylindrical flint embedded in the side. Personally, I just use a flint & steel. I suppose the magnesium might be handy when starting fires with wet tinder. It takes quite a lot of effort to scrape enough off with a knife to be useful.
This fire starter is not made of only magnesium.
Here is the breakdown:
Percentage: Iron 19%, Cerium 38%, Lanthanum 22%, Neodymium 4%, Praseodymium 4%, Magnesium 4%
