Meritline has the Magnesium Flint Fire Steel Starter Striker for $3.99 - $2.50 with coupon code MLCKIP7NL1 [300 uses] = $1.49 with free shipping. Produces 5500F degree sparks to start a fire in almost any conditions. Bear Grylls approved.
Someone should come up with a better way to create a flame. Maybe small enough to fit in your pocket and one hand operation. Could be a real money maker.
If it really comes down to having to use this thing, you're probably already in too much trouble to get out of anyways. Might as well just lay down and call it good. Ha.
^ I wouldn't call it much trouble, could simply be that you lost your butane lighter or it ran out of fuel. Decent quality ones (I don't own this one) take a few minutes to get a big enough pile of shaving to do much but aren't hard to use, a pretty reliable way to start a fire provided you can find some dry tender.
Clever description from ben. Too bad the meritline description doesn't mention magnesium at all. meritline's description is accurate as it is just a 'flint' and steel. Perhaps ben needs some reading lessons.
Not exactly magnesium. It is made from Ferrocerium, and a steel striker.
-- Who says it's not magnesium?
-- They sell these at trade shows for $10 a piece!
I don't care what it's made of... they work well. I order them every time Meritline has them cheap - then give them away.

It is curious that the picture doesn't show any magnesium, but the meritline description mentions scraping magnesium to use as kindling.
Either the picture is incorrect or the description is incorrect.
Either way, it does not reflect well on meritline.
