MidnightBox.com has the Max DVP-6160 Progressive Scan DVD Player for $15 + $5 shipping = $20 shipped. Ditch your interlaced DVD player for something a bit newer and HDTV friendly.

It's probably a Coby in a black dress. Might be better off with one of those Philips refurbs with USB

I don't know anything about this DVD player but I picked up one of the Philips refurbs awhile back and I'm not at all happy with it. Controls are slow and unresponsive and the software on the DVD is just poorly done. I'd stay away from the Philips ones.

ppl get the Philips ones not for the controls and firmware, but rather for the DivX/XviD playback capabilities. do your homework...

not sure what Ben is getting at, but most if not all DVD players on the market today are progressive scan, other than those ultra cheap ones without component or HDMI/DVI output

now, as for the actual ppl who configured their analog component to output in progressive scan, that's a different story

Now, if this DVD player did 1080p upscaling over HDMI, then we might actually have a selling point, besides just being a budget player

your LCD deinterlaces picture too, as do most mid-level receivers. i wouldn't be so sure that a $20 DVD player would have better electronics and de-interlacing results than a $600 receiver or a $1000 TV.

This would be a good buy for someone with an older generation Tube HDTV. Those tend to have excellent built in 1080i upconverters, better than most upscaling DVD players do, and way better than flat panel TV's do (these tv's just don't have the space). Just hook it up with component cables. If you have a flat panel TV, then you should keep away from this.

EDIT: It's dual NTSC/PAL - so it will accept Region 2 DVD's. Good choice if you couldn't resist buying movies on your most recent European vacation, only to find out they don't work back in the states. This will help you feel less stupid.

Well, if we're going to wait until '...Blueray players drop down to $20...', this might tide us over for a few years, at about $3 per year.
