what are the differences between this and the 2007 version? is it just a map update? will the software work with the 2007 receiver? it looks just like the one i have.

Diferences between Streets and Trips 2008 and 2007 are 2008 requires product activation, more features/updates, and it works with any GPS receiver as long as it comes with driver for your OS. If you already have a GPS receiver, you can buy this version without GPS for around $30.

You won't be able to use in the car unless you got a laptop available.

Well I already use my laptop to watch porn vids while I'm driving, so that's not an issue.
