I guess if you want to see the new Blue Screen of Death it should be the Ultimate version.

You guys can go back to my mothers basement now and play with your Linux crap on hardware I threw out 4 years ago.

How's that for snark? If you don't like it, simply move along.

Easy boys. You don't need this until 2012 when XP expired. Now go back to work.

The world is over in 2012, sometime around the jolly red fatman day.

      HO MERRY DEAD!

Buying here... Windows 7 RC is top notch for me. I'd suggest it to anyone and if your thinking you'll pick it up in June when the RC expires, save yourself some cash and get it now. It won't be this heavily discounted later on.

As for the nay sayers, no BSOD's here. I game in multiple windows across multiple monitors, run VM's of Windows, Linux, OSX, etc.. without issue. Yes I have a beefy machine but 7 runs great on another old machine I have (Athlon 4000+, 2gb).

Anyhow, my point, if your thinking your ever gonna make that step, go ahead because the price is likely to not be this good for a long while. And while your waiting for your copy, go ahead and back your shizzle up so you can do a fresh install. Upgrading an OS is for chumps.

If you have Vista, go ahead and upgrade, if you have XP skip it or upgrade your computer.

OEM means you're tied to the motherboard on which it's first installed. MS has been pretty good about reactivating on another MB should the original one get fried, but it's up to them to allow that. Then there's the issue of whether or not an end-user can legally install an OEM version (another non-enforced MS limitation).

List price is about $220 for the non-OEM Ultimate upgrade, and about $200 for the non-OEM Professional upgrade (big difference is that they're upgrades, tho', so you need a prior license).

Win 7 is looking to be an excellent OS, but I don't see why most users would need the Ultimate version. It offers Bitlocker encryption, but you can get that feature for free elsewhere (Truecrypt). It also offers 35 languages, so if you absolutely need other than English, you're stuck buying it. Other than that, it's the same as the 7 Pro.

If you want to save a few bucks, go for the 7 Pro OEM at $120, much better value.

A few months ago, MS offered Home and Pro (upgrades) for $50 & $100, respectively (both 32/64 bit included, non-OEM). That offer ended, but MS is currently offering college students an upgrade license of Home or Pro, 32 or 64 bit, for like $30 (but you have to have a student email address).

#18: TrueCrypt does not make use of a TPM motherboard chip like BitLocker will. Also, M$ will give you like 3 activations before you have to call and get a different product key--usually from some pleasant sounding woman from India.
