FYI - if you want to do anything with media on the PC you will have to buy the the most expensive version - Pro. Also, if you want to do something as simple as watching a DVD on your computer, not only will you need Pro, but you will also have to buy a codec-pack through the Metro App store.

Welcome to the wonderful world of paying Microsoft for everything you put on your PC.

Chris Pirillo has a video clip showing PC users meeting Windows 8 for the first time. None of them could figure out how to back out of program, or shut the computer down. Thanks Microsoft! We really old timers figured out quickly enough that Alt-F4 works, but what about a newbie? This is easy to use?

A new version of an Microsoft operating system isn't always better than the version it is superseding. Microsoft has demonstrated a propensity for pushing out flawed "upgrade" versions in the past.

If I had to chose for a home computer operating system, I'd pass on this experimental version...

Or, you could just install VLC. For free.

It's not like Microsoft is forcing you to use Windows Media Player.

I haven't used Windows media player for much of anything in years, but somehow I have still been able to play lots of media on my computer.

    So CW,
You going to go for this?

I've only been running 7 for a year or so and can't make up my mind whether or not to grab these pre-release offers or not.

    Just wondering.

I don't see the point of the pre-offers. Once it comes out you can order it online, directly from microsoft for $40. Why pay more for it just so you can pre-order? It's not like they're going to run out of stock of downloads.

As I'm currently assembling a new computer, I do plan to put Windows 8 on it. I'll just buy it on the launch date for $40.
