Hotness UNHOT
Newegg has the Microsoft Windows 8 Operating System Software, 64-bit OEM (WN7-00404) for $100 - $20 off with coupon code EMCYTZT2618 [Exp 12/9] = $80 with free shipping. Normally $100. This is the full-version software, but OEM is intended for new systems and cannot be transferred to another computer once it is installed.

You're freaking my head out with that math, Ben...

    Windows 8 ^64(OEM) + 100 -10 = 80

The coupon is for $20 off, so the price is $80 as stated.

#4, if you are considering buying this, are you aware you can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for an existing windows install for $40, or $15 if you bought a Windows 7 computer from June 2012 on, at Microsoft? And you won't be getting an OEM license either... You can also get the Media Center added for no charge if you don't wait too long...

Windows 8 is basically Windows 7 with some improved boot up speed and is reportedly more secure. The M*etro Interface can be pretty much be relegated to an alternate user interface status using the right software tools (Classic Menu/StarIsBack). M*etro is fun to visit but I wouldn't want to be stuck with it as the only user interface.

The reason I have installed Windows 8 on a lot of my computers is that I wanted to learn Windows 8 because, well, computer are a hobby and I'll likely have to fix other people's computer that have it installed. Windows 8 will likely be supported by MS longer than Windows 7. As far as I can tell, I have none OEM Windows 8 Pro licenses that will allow moving the license among other computers if I chose, and the cost I have into Windows 8 is hardly anything...

Unless I'm unaware that Windows 8 is missing something that Windows 7 had, I think it a good decision to move to Windows 8 especially with the cheap price now. You can make it look just like Windows 7. One thing MS did was to take out Media Center however you can get it added back in for free for another month or two if your are running Windows 8 Pro. I found out too that Office 2003 won't work in Windows 8 but Office 2007 does...

Also, I wanted to learn Windows 8 before dave_c did so I could know something that he doesn't. He know everything about electronics, and he even knows how to grow tomatoes in his back yard...

Yes #11, it's well known but probably not kosher to blab about the KMS activation and Media Center key registration hole here...

#10, this is the one I'm using. It uses the native Start Menu code that Microsoft disabled:

    http://startisback.com/

    From StartIsBack:

StartIsBack is an application improves desktop usability and makes new Start screen clutter-free. StartIsBack is fully native lightweight zero-privileges program. Your session would start with the desktop. StartIsBack goes directly to desktop every time without flashing start screen even for a millisecond. Features include restores original Windows 7 start menu with all its features: search, drag and drop, pinned and recently used applications, and fully customizable settings, desktop and modern interfaces are clearly separated, able to provide consistency in Windows 8 by separating desktop and modern programs, make start screen clutter-free, totally native, and rich customization and configuration.

    $3 for 2 licenses
    $5 for 5 licenses

Try before you buy. It's a very small program to download and install...

    Stardock's version. I think it $5 a throw:

    http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

Classic Menu Shell. Free to use:

I don't understand the big deal about faster boot times.

My computer only reboots after monthly MS updates. Otherwise, I put it to sleep when not in use. Time required to wake and start working - 2-4 seconds. Is the world really full of baconeer that turn their computers off all of the time?

^ I couldn't agree more. Except for OS updates I hibernate mine and they are back up far faster than any OS could hope to do cold booting. Granted, hibernating takes a dozen seconds instead of 4, but the whole idea of boot times being important seems to miss the point that we're putting a band-aid on an OS flaw.

Windows 8 was made for touch screens so it could be universal across multiple devices, which is cool BUT 99% of home users do not have touch screens on laptops or desktops so it is worthless.

Does Windows 8 boot faster? maybe - I am still wondering what will happen over long term use since, as far as I know, they are still using the registry which is the major cause of slow downs over time.

Windows 8 is a no go on my end. I just cant see the use for it and all the systems I build will come with Windows 7 unless my customer would want a touch screen.

To all the Linux people out there - COMBINE - I have said this for years and though something would happen when Ubuntu really took off but alas, it hasnt. Nobody wants 60billion different distros with different looks and different ways to do things. Nobody wants to use the command line for anything so figure out how to make install packages that do not need a user to hit the command line. I am talking about the packages not in the update/store/software center/whatever else people want to call it.

If Linux would combine and make just a few distros with easy access to add ons, I would change to linux on my built systems. Linux is like Android, too many distros which hurt the name with no end in sight because every yahoo out there thinks they have the best package because they changed the colors or added a pretty picture.

Also, most help channels for linux are full of douchebags who think they are god and you should just read 50,000 pages of text rather than just giving the user a straight answer. Linux needs a lot of help before it would ever be widely accepted and nobody is even trying, that's the problem.

You keep on thinking like that #16 and you'll never be the big shot expert for Windows 8 questions around here... You'll be relegated to batteries and flashlight tech support department...

I'm of the opinion that you shouldn't fix something unless it is broken, and if it is broken and you claim you fixed it, fixed better mean less bugs not castrated.
