Newegg has the Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade Version for $70 - $40 rebate [Exp 1/27] = $30 with free shipping. Through January 31st, Microsoft Store still has it for $40 downloaded with Media Center for free. This is for upgrades from Windows 7, Vista or XP SP3, not Windows 8.
Is Win 7 included in this? I'd like to upgrade from Vista. Ah! Microsoft! Never make a product that's good enough, so customers are constantly upgrading. I started wit DOS 3.0 and jumped on every "improvement" except Win 98 (thank goodness). The best of the lot was NT 2000.
I set up my first Windows Server 2012 yesterday and it has the same crappy Metro interface. It defaults to the "desktop" view, but you still have to bring up the tiled Start view to click your programs (unless you fill your desktop with a bunch of program icons). Sucks @$$.
I must be in the silent majority, but I switched all of my computers from Win 7 (1) and Vista (2) to Win 8, and I bought a new Win 8 laptop. Win 8 definitely could be improved, but it learns and starts on the desktop--so I rarely need to access the tiles or see them. So what's the problem? Spending $80 for the upgrade for my 2 Vista machines was cheaper than spending $200+ on Win 7 OS, now I have TRIM on all of my machines for my SSDs. I also used the new install workaround to get around the upgrade BS, so I installed the "upgrades" on clean drives with no pre-existing Win 7 installation.
Would Windows 8 be good for a home theater pc controlled by a Harmony 1100 remote? I have Vista on it right now, but I would like to get TRIM support to put an SSD in it.
i upgraded two XP and one 7 machines to 8. i spend most of my time trying to be productive with applications and not watching the metro tiles. as far as how it works, it's not all that different than Windows 7 or the previous versions. i might have designed the menu a little differently but there are other largely unpublished improvements in Windows 8 worth considering, such as better SSD support and File explorer improvements. ars techinca a while ago had an excellent article about all the under-the-hood improvements in Windows 8 that technies care about. ever since Apple started dominating the mobile computing, it seems like coolness and UI design are the only criteria by which a tech product is judged by. should you upgrade your perfectly running Win 7 machines? no, it's not mandatory. but if you're buying a new computer, you shouldn't try to avoid win 8 as if it were a plague.
WTH are some of these commenters talking about? Fail? BS. Microsoft has licensed 60 million copies of Win8 so far. Its basically Win7 with an extra metro screen for noobs and pebkac's.
I would suggest that #6 and #10 stay in school and quit trolling nonsense. Win8 is nothing like Vista.
The lack of a start button and basically being force fed Metro is what sucks about Windows 8. Luckily there are free solutions to get the start button back. I probably won't upgrade my Windows 7 machines, but like number 8 said for the price to upgrade an older machine, why not.
Down $10 from the last time you guys didn't like this.
Last time there was no rebate. Less than 40% of people fill out rebates, although this number might be higher on this site.
Spend $70 and submit $40 rebate to save a measly $10? Makes no sense. Even less sense if you paid tax on that $40.
And seriously what fool is going to upgrade to Windows 8. It basically blows.

Windows 8 will fail just like Vista.

You don't sound silent to me...
8 is not for you if you don't have a touch screen, it is designed for touch screen or tablet.

The rebate request process does not work. Newegg obviously needs help with web page design.
The Newegg chat supposedly is available 24x7. My chat request has been "submitting" for 40 minutes now.
2 strikes against Newegg now.

Asked about the rebate offer not being found to get the form and they said they know about the problem and to check again tomorrow.
trying to get some trim right know
they need an option to revert this back to win 7 then it will sell @ $30.
