Now available. Microsoft has the Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade Version for $40 downloaded. For the brave or crazy, this is your chance to give it a whirl unless you really must have that box.
I just ordered this from Amazon. Same price after gift card if you have Prime plus you'll get a hard disc which is better than dealing with making one from download. Have 3 PC's using Win 7 so I'll try Win 8 on one of them and see if it's as bad as the skeptics say. Sounds like it will be a good fit for my media PC.
I've been using the preview version of Windows 8 for the past 3 months. It's a slick OS. Takes some getting used to the interface but it's very intuitive and the improvements are significant in regard to performance, workflow and features. I also love the idea of a full OS on a tablet even though I don't have one yet. I also preordered the retail version at Amazon.
The main purpose of the OS for me is to be able to start the applications and to switch between them. I don't work in the OS, I work in applications, so the less I see the OS -- the better. That's where Win8 fails me. Starting applications takes more clicks/time. The search options WinKey+StartSearch and other key shortcuts work just as well in Win7. If showing the start menu "erases" my entire 30 inch monitor -- that's not a good experience. No useful Metro applications are available yet and the whole idea of shoving Metro down my throat is annoying. So, no go for me. Not that I couldn't get used to it, but I have tools that are more efficient than Window8.
I think this OS like any other ms has had over the years will win or lose based on its stability. Win 7 is good because its stable. Vista, not so much. XP was good. Win98, not so much.
#6, Ben took issue with the term M*etro so they blacked listed it. Funny thing is that's what MS called there new OS smart phone interface thingie... Ben's word blacklisting filter has a tenancy of backfiring on them often. So when you are in these forums, Ben's official term for the new Windows 8's user interface is "bacon-lust". I kind'a think it a better suited term for it anyways...
Good OS as far as stability, speed, and improved features. Bad OS for interface, no start button, harder to navigate. Designed for touch screens and tablets. No need to spend money to upgrade if you alreadyhave Windows 7 unless you have to have the "bacon-lust."
I don't have "bacon-lust" but I'm still Mr. Cheapo running XP on a refurbished dell I bought 10 yrs ago. It's still rockin. Yeah, I don't do games, just Web, Emails, Office. Online games for my kids. You're gonna have to pull XP out of my cold, dead hands....
been running the preview as many have, once you spend some time using it (very little actually) you learn it is much easier to get around than all the haters want you to believe. It is a great OS and is measurably faster than win7. But I too HAD to have a start button, I just like I had to have a mouse with my laptop ,,yes I am a old goat set in his ways, thank god for Google - free app that works great http://lee-soft.com/vistart/
Just checked. Says "coming soon". Isn't that different from "Now Available".

Anyone installed it yet? If so, what do you think?

Isn't that kind'a like painting lipstick on a pig?
