Ends 1/31. Microsoft Store still has the Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade Version for $40 downloaded. This is the introductory offer that has been running since late October but will end on the 31st. Add Media Center for free.
Whoops, the last listing had too much negativity, so Ben has to re-list the same thing again.
I think the general consensus in the last go-around was that everybody was too stoopid to appreciate the staggering beauty of 8's design. The clarity and Truth of the Angelic Host in the new startup tune is a bit too much for most mortal minds to perceive without exploding. Perhaps the only true fault of 8 is in being brought to the realm of Man before the fallen creature is ready.
Yeah, most don't understand the value of turning your desktop into a cell phone interface... The information density is so low that you can't help but be relaxed by the unclutterness of the whole experience. What do you expect from mere mortals?
Samsung just announced they won't make a windows tablet. I wonder why that is? Ah because they don't sell....
You would think that when the Windows phones didn't compete that MS would have realized that this wasn't going to compete. The fact that they advertised that people were spending so much time looking at their phones was because they couldn't find anything really tells you how much they understand the technology space. I'm not a huge fan of Apple at all and I think they are way too expensive but they do seem to understand that you have to sell the image and the experience.
I've converted my 8 Acer Aspire as close to 7 as possible. The biggest advantage to 8 is a quicker bootup, as far as I can tell. Note: Avoid 8 RT at all costs. It won't run ANY of your old programs, and if you want to revert to 7, you are SOL.
I thought I had windows 8, but was relieved to find out it was only gonorrhea and shot in the backside quickly cleared it.
windows 8 is an innovative approach to combine tablet and traditional pc functionality. Devices like the Lenovo Twist are a good example of a hybrid device which supports both classes of functionality. I just returned my Twist as although the Twist is an excellent first generation device, I decided to wait for a fully functional iCore pc tablet based on the new processors Intel announced at the CES - the reduced power consumption is fantastic.
The present Windows 8 tablet which only supports new apps is useless - if that were it, I would stick with my iPad and Galaxy tablets.

Just couldn't make it easy to switch from traditional interface to a touchscreen interface in Windows 8. Yes I know about the registry hack & the windows key but that's still a hack. Windows RT was just a waste of time.
Crap...I was going to do the upgrade program to get Windows 8 for $15 (just to have in case an SP came out with enough fixes to make it viable), but now I'm thinking I may just save my $15. Oh well...I do happen to really like Windows 7.
Microsoft continue the tradition of "every other consumer release is bad":
Windows 8: Bad
Windows 7: Good
Windows Vista: Bad
Windows XP: Good
Windows ME: Bad
Windows 98: Good (well, OK)
Windows 95: Bad
Windows 3.1: OK-ish
Windows 8 is an epic fail that is even recognized by most major brand OEM's including Asus who have gone on the record to voice their displeasure in the OS. They're even blaming the terrible sales figures of desktops to it.
Adding to Rarb entry.
Windows NT: Bad, no USB
Windows 2000: Good, six service packs +USB
Windows 8: Bad
Windows 7: Good
Windows Vista: Bad
Windows XP: Good
Windows ME: Bad
Windows 98: Good (well, OK)
Windows 95: Bad
Windows 3.1: OK-ish
I would rate 98 very good, ME a complete joke, and Vista the sequel to ME.
Win2k was the best MS OS ever, being both stable and lean, and before they turned the GUI into a gradient rainbow colored childrens' interface.
And yet a couple of clicks on WinXP, and you can have that same exact classic GUI. Minus the Welcome screen. But no one cares about that anyway. Because you can do the same damn thing with Windows 7 and has much better PnP support, which most people DO care about.
^ Apparently a lot of people do care about GUI changes, hadn't you noticed a lot of negativity about Win8? PnP is not a big deal, that's just a bunch of drivers thrown onto the installation disc and a list, something MS could bolt onto any OS which a driver exists for. Personally I prefer using a newer full featured manufacturer supplied driver rather than have windows PnP a crippled one.
