after struggling with this toy, I reverted to Classic look and downloaded and installed a start menu. Bliss.

Upgraded two of my friend's computer to Windows 8 today; each one has the classic shell installed. Best of both world.

    Metro should have been select-able.

Tried every release of it, couldn't stand any of them, back on windows 7. Even at this price, just say no. Tablet interface on desktop is not a fun thing. Speedwise it is fine, if you can get past what microsoft did to turn windows into Window.

Start me up! Oh, what? You didn't want to pay the Rolling Stones millions of dollars again for a catch phrase? Silly Microsoft.

Keep Win7 as long as you like, but the day will come when you will run into "Only compatible with Windows 8 or higher".

"Keep Win7 as long as you like, but the day will come when you will run into "Only compatible with Windows 8 or higher". "

I'm still waiting for the day when apps and games says "Only compatible with Vista or higher." Until then XP is still alive and Windows 7 is gonna live even longer than XP.

Rest assure that by the time Win7 dies, Win8 will have a quicker death with Win9 replacing it within a year.

Yeah, the day things will only run with Win8 may be a decade into the future. If/when the rare item comes along that doesn't have support for a broad range of OS, that's a reason I'll avoid the product as it is a sign of poor support in general, an indicator of company policy on how long into the future they'd support their product line even if it did happen to be Win8 you wanted to use it on and keep using subsequent versions on after later versions of Windows are released.

They should give it out free - and it still wouldn't convince me to install. Yes, it is faster/snappier in general - but does that make up for the disaster of Metro? Nope.

Even Apple knows not to put iOS on their macbooks. Mobile interfaces are inherently different than desktop ones. Apple got that right because they knew the limitations and strengths of each platform and catered the best USER experience for each of them.

Yes, they'll fix it next time... Metro or Classic appearance should have been selectable. And while you can download workarounds we shouldnt need to do that.
Microsoft made just too quick of right turn for the PC user side of things.

Areo and Media Center are missing in Windows 8... In some respects, it's less capable than Windows 7.

Windows 7 is one of the very few Windows that wasn't cracked beyond all repair. Much like Windows 98 and XP, you skip an iteration before trading it in.
