Tiger Direct has the Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Upgrade Version from XP, Vista and Windows 7 (3UR-00001) on pre-order for $70 - $10 off with coupon code AXM73492 [Exp 10/14] + $0 shipping (EconoShip) = $60 shipped. The Pro Upgrade from Windows 8 (5VR-00001) is $60 shipped with code KHI73498. The release date is October 26th. You will be able to upgrade online for $40 if you can wait until that date. Newegg is also taking $10 off with code EMCJNJH82 [Exp 10/14].
Newegg has Windows 8 64-bit Full Version (OEM) on pre-order for $100 - $10 off w/ EMCJNJH82 = $90 with free shipping
So how does it equal $50?
These "upgrade" licenses are supposedly not good for a fresh install, but even on Microsoft's site I have found a way of deleting a key that allows a fresh install to go through.
The Windows 8 interface is pitiful. No start button. It might be worth it on a touch screen device but not for a stand alone computer. If you have Windows 7 there is no reason to upgrade to this. Microsoft should give this away for free if you already have Windows 7.
^Something worth considering if you only have Windows "Home" edition. You would have the added features of Pro plus many more years worth of support.
Smeagle, care to share your link for the key delete.
Might be time to get a touch screen. Anyone have one that can recommend? Looks like it would be a super big iphone.
This should be advertised as a downgrade...
Download a preview and install it on a spare drive, or in a virtual machine to see if you like it. For me the new interface appeared to be significantly slower on both the desktop and a laptop (both without a touch screen). The fact that switching the apps in the desktop mode completely redraws the entire screen and requires more mouse clicks to get to was very annoying. Win7 is perfectly good.
I do not need it. At least for now.
I still use XP Pro.
A few months ago the word was $40 for the Win 8 upgrade now it's $60. Maybe MS will lower the price once the negative press starts to circulate.

@ontherivet READ. 40 dollars for non hard copy (online download). 69 dollars for a hard copy.
Goob unfortunately I'm not at work, but if you type the error you get when activating into google, you'll get your answer. Mind you I've only done this on win 7 pro not win 8 .
Xx, my bad, thank you
^^ Yeah I'm aware of the Win 7 hack, I thought maybe there was already a hack out for Win 8 upgrade.
FYI, Win 8 Home does not come with Media Center (it's an extra charge) so if your buying Win 8 for a HTPC you will need Pro.
I'm running Windows 8 in Virtual Box and it just irritates me. Microsoft rushed out the door to play catch up with everybody else with Apps. An App on a computer is just a fancy name for a program. I click on it and it works. Same difference. Check out Maximum Pc, they list the improvements under the hood. Quicker startup, etc. Install was painless but you are asked for the product code and an email address to complete. Microsoft wants to force the Metro interface on you by default. They really should give an option for the standard desktop. I doubt I will upgrade any time soon.
I'll upgrade when Microsoft upgrades 7 with a desktop's OS.
@goob windows media will be free if you buy online. Though you need to check the box saying you want windows media center for free. at least that is what i;ve read
Windows Media Center is not the same thing as Windows Media Player.
Windows 8 is fine when I used it but if you have a box sitting at home..I wouldn't bother. Maybe..if you have a solid state disc for your laptop..that would be just about the only case IMO.
Otherwise, Windows 8 is only beneficial for the new tablet devices MS intends to promote.
Windows 8 includes HyperV. That's about the only good thing I have heard about it, and that's only of interest to people who like to run virtual machines.
If still feel $40 is a good deal for anyone running anything less than a "Pro" version of Windows on a PC they envision using 10 years from now. The extended service that comes with Pro over Home and Starter is usually 5 years longer. If you are running XP, now would be a good time to upgrade. Vista and 7 can probably wait for the Windows 9 upgrade. Analysis is purely based on lifespan of the OS, not on performance. If Win 8 sucks as bad as some claim, people often exaggerate, you may want to wait a few months and see what issues arise after the release date. The upgrade deal doesn't expire until some time in January of next 2013.
