The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is a land-mobile radio service available for short-distance two-way communications to facilitate the activities of an adult individual and his or her immediate family members, including a spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and in-laws (47 CFR 95.179). Normally, as a GMRS system licensee, you and your family members would communicate among yourselves over the general area of your residence or during recreational group outings, such as camping or hiking.

The FCC grants five-year renewable licenses ($85.00) for GMRS Systems. The individual licensee is responsible for the proper operations of the licensed GMRS system at all times.

Wow, 20 miles. This sounds great for a "lost in the mountain" from hiking tool. Christmas list checked.

Yup, definitely get your license if you want to use GMRS (the fine is huge and not worth the trouble, but it also is what allows us to keep these frequencies somewhat open to the public, so it's a good cause if you're using it!).

The one reviewer mentions that this radio is lacking privacy codes (their one gripe with this set), so take that into account.

They do work good for 1/2 mile or so in the hills and trees but they say 20mile range. Must be line of site, cause throw a bunch of buildings in the mix and what not... You might get a mile.

Not even on the moon. Moon is smaller than earth, so you will not have line of sight on the moon at 20 miles....

      Just saying.

The curvature of the Earth showed that the earth curves approximately 8 inches per mile. Since 6 feet is 72 inches and 98 = 72, the Earth curves approximately 6 feet in 9 miles. Thus the two men would have to be approximately 18 miles apart. Assuming that both parties are 6ft tall. Midgets' mileage will vary.

I could use it in place of my cell phone if it works around 5-7 miles in the city.
