20 miles seems a bit extreme...I would be shocked if technology has come up that far. I recall not so long ago that 5 miles was something unheard of in a walkie talkie. For the price...I am finding it hard to believe

I just checked, it's got 4 AAA batteries (which is generally a good sign). Crappy ones ues only 3 batteries and they don't seem to be as powerful.

Note that to use the GMRS features you are obligated to get a license from the FCC.

If they work anything like the 5 miles ones I got then they are not worth it. They worked for about a week and now they just drain the battery when being used.

20 miles is the circumference, guys. It's only a 3.2 mile radius.

#6 might be right as it is marketing hype. As for line of sight, the curvature of the earth for a 6ft man line of sight to another 6ft man is right at 18 miles.

I have one pair of these. There is certainly no problem for a few miles radius, even in mountain area. I used them last winter in a ski trip, and I was able to communicate from the slop of ski area to the hotel, which was quite a few miles away. That was quite impresive.

It can also take 4x AAA battary as well. You can select the high or low power radio mode. It lasts only about a day, if you set the power on high and use 4x AAA battary, on hunting trip.

your lucky if you get up to 2 miles in any urban city with these unless the model requires an FCC license. besides, it would be nice if these came with individual chargers for each unit, rather than a single base.
