Buy.com has the Monster Power MP-HTS850 8-Outlet Surge Suppressor with Stage 1 Clean Power v2.0 Noise Filter and Phone Protection for $73 with free shipping. [BizRate]
You've got to be kidding! - a $73 surge protector. And don't give me all the technical stuff. I'm an electrical engineer and I know SP costing far less are equally as good. It's playing on the ignorance of the public.
Now, I'm not saying #1 isn't a good electrical engineer. But just because you are one doesn't necessarily mean you are a good one. It's kind of like the President of the United States claiming to be able to do a good job of running the country based on the fact that he's the President!
They have demos with various SPs hooked up to device that measures electrical noise. Using that device, you can see a difference in the readings between a $10 SP and a Monster SP. So, it obviously does provide a benefit the $10 SPs don't. But, would that difference be noticeable when watching a TV or listening to speakers? If so, is it a $73 difference?
Rule of thumb...match quality of accessories to the quality of the product. Honestly, if you just bought a TV for $6000, what's $73 on a SP? But, if you bought a TV for $300, a $73 SP probably isn't necessary. Don't put racing slicks on a Yugo and don't put bicycle tires on a Porsche.
#3, you say that "they" have demos... Who is this "they"? Monster?
There are any umber of demos that product manufacturers have used to show how superior their product is. Sometimes those demos show things that the customer actually needs to care about. Sometimes they show nothing useful at all. Sometimes these demos use equivalent products -- and sometimes they use products hand-picked to exaggerate differences.
I'm inclined to believe an electrical engineer in things electrical, over someone who has just seen some vendor demos. What about you?
#3: Yes, you should match quality of the product to the quality of the accessories. Here's a burp hint retodd; just because something has a high price does not mean it is of high quality. Everything in the burp Sharper Image catalog has a high price but it's also all baconnaise that they rummaged out of a dumpster.
You need to get your burp head examined before I allow you to blow me again. It seems like with the mental problems that you've got, I just can't trust you not to use teeth. burp You.
#4 Agreed. Infomercials sure make products look good! So, yes, never trust a vendor demo. I have a background in EE as well though. Line noise is real. Filtering can reduce line noise. Run a vacuum to generate line noise on a TV. Then, hook the TV up to the SP with filtering. See if you can tell the difference. It's an extreme case, but does test the product.
#5 Once again having a reading problem. I never said high price equals high quality. I said match the quality of the accessories to the quality of the product. A $73 SP by Monster is a better quality SP than ones that retail for $10. Should you pay $73 for that SP by Monster? That's your call. If I were to buy it though, I'd get the Monster SP at a price of $10. That SP is merely a toy though, so I wouldn't waste my time with it.
I have this and am pretty happy with it. It was a gift, so I'm out of the cost/value issue for mine. I never have problems watching TV when my wife runs the vacuume cleaner, other than I can't hear the TV very well. I won't buy another Monster product though, as they are clearly over-priced for what they do in everything they sell. I'm sure a nice $30-40 with filtering would do just as nice for 1/2 the price.
Of course you're not going to run a vacuum and watch TV at the same time. It's just an extreme example of line noise. DVD players and cellphone chargers produce a lot of line noise. Nothing like a vacuum or a blender, but still noisy.
It's like a bottle of expensive wine or $5 chuck. Both are going to get you the same drunk, so why spend money on the expensive bottle?
Why spend $3800 for the Denon DVD-5910CI DVD player? It's not even BluRay or HD-DVD. Spend $40 and buy the Element upconversion DVD player at Circuit City. They do the same thing, right? They both play movies.
If you have an expensive TV, you'd see the difference between those DVD players. You'd see the difference in having quality cables (not necessarily Monster). You'd see the difference between a $10 SP and a $1500 SP. What the average person sees as "expensive cables" in a store are just toys compared to what is out there on the market.
I'm sure not going to buy a $3800 DVD player anytime soon, if ever. I'm not going to buy a $40 player either.
Buy.com sucks. I bought a black Zune in mid November and they never shipped it. I have contacted them a dozen times and all the people in politicians can say is that they have "filed a claim with Henry".

All you discussed in comparing those two products was the price. You cited no actual reason why you believe the two products differ in quality other than price. I wasn't saying that you were making that claim; I was saying that with your tiny little mind, you're obviously equating a higher price with higher quality.
I hope you get hit by a bus. Why should I even waste my time on a burp ignoramus like you?

You are the ignorant one. This acts as a barrier against signal degradation and helps filter dirty electricity.

Monster = Waste of Money. Do what you wish. If this makes you happy inside, you should probably buy it. It does nothing for me though.
#6 and #7, why the hell would you vacuum and watch TV at the same time? Isn't it kind of hard to listen to your TV while doing this?
Kind of reminded me of this:
Cal Naughton, Jr.: Hey, when you have the stereo and TV on, how do you change the volume on the stereo?
Ricky Bobby: Why do you have the stereo on while you're watching TV?
Cal Naughton, Jr.: 'Cause I like to party.
lol
