Still too rich for my blood.
I'm going to wait to get my digital box before deciding if I need something like this.
probably wrong place to ask, but I have channels in my basic cable that don't come in clear, but I see picture and sound, just not good, could this possibly make them come in better?
No, this will only make a weak signal able to go over longer coax runs.
If you don't have long coax runs this will do nothing for you.
Amplifying a bad signal, is still a bad signal..bacon will just travel further.
Before you decide if you need this, you should have your cable company come take a look at your picture, and then do some tests for signal. If you're not getting good reception, most likely there is a crimped or damaged coax cable somewhere, they can locate it and replace it.
Unless they are Comcast...then they are the devil. Do not let them in your home, no matter how shitty the pic on your TV. You have been warned...
I tried this, it does boost your signal, which helps lower number channels, but it will also add more noise, and makes some of your higher channels fuzzy. Just my 2 cents.
I bought one of these because I am running four TVs and one computer off my cable line. Cleared up the picture quality nicely. I highly recommend.

I second the comcast comment. My cable modem took a dump and they sent a guy out who saw a normal cable splitter and claimed it was a signal booster and that was what fried the cable modem and I'd have to pay for a new modem. I told him to look closer and he reluctantly went out to the truck and came back with a new modem.
If you live in an area with extremely poor signal, this won't help much. I live near the mountains and this did nothing for me =(
Please trust my professional opinion here... if you have to ask if you need this... you DO NOT NEED IT. You have to understand how cable systems work. Everyone's cable situation is different. Call your cable company ask for someone to come out and check your signal.
I used to work for a major cable company and 90% of the problems I experienced were from people just being plain stupid. Maybe stupid is a harsh word, uneducated is probably more correct. Cable is delicate and you can't buy quality cable at radio shack. And don't use crimp fittings either. oh and my favorite one... Gold splitters aren't better. good luck
With all due respect to your professional opinion, #13, the cable companies use the cable provided by THE LOWEST BIDDER (since they run hundreds of miles of the crap, they aren't using silver-plated coax), so the stuff at Radio Shack is most likely just as good. Agree that gold splitters are a marketing gimmick.
Oh, and by the way, Comcast is the Devil.
My signal was within tolerance, channels worked with the standard cable box. But I've got a Tivo S3 and was having pixilation on some channels, this device really helped and did not mess up my broadband access. Good buy at a good price.
