I got an MSI hd 4850 in my rig, don't know about the warranty, it has the same huge heatsink as this one and overclocks really well. Love it!

hmmm...you know, i've been using MSI parts for years with no problems, so i've never needed to use the warranty. good to know though!
assuming i'm not a fan of the radeon #1 suggests (just haven't had luck with radeon in the past), this looks like a nice upgrade from an 8800 gt (and about a quarter of the price that cost me a couple years ago)

IMO, this is a bit over priced for what you are getting. The 9800 is just a rebranded 8800. The only real difference here (besides outputs) is the lower clock speed. MSI, ASUS and a few others did release 1 GB versions of the 8800 GT.

Compare ASUS 8800 GT 1GB to the MSI 9800 GT 1GB:

    Core Clock - 600Mhz (8800) versus 550Mhz (9800)
    Viedo Memory - 1GB DDR3 equal
    Steam Processors - 112 equal
Effective Memory Clock - 1800 MHz equal
    Memory Size - 1GB equal
    Memory Interface - 256-bit equal
    Memory Type - GDDR3 - equal
    DirextX 10 - equal
    OpenGL - 2.0 (8800) versus 2.1 (9800)
    Output - 2x DVI, HDTV/SVideo Out (8800) versus HDMI, DSUB, DVI (9800)
    RAMDAC - equal
    Resolution - equal

I don't think the minor differences justify the cost. If you really want a replacement card my recommendations would be:

    1. to buy another 8800 GT and run it in SLI (#4)
    2. wait for Fermi release and prices to drop and grab a GTX 285/295 or ATI equivalent
    3. spend the extra $20 and get a 5770 1GB

Nice to see a pratical thinker...
On what #5 said I just want to clarify one thing, that was the 9800GT normal referance clock is 600Mhz so this MSI is considered underclocked.
    http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=544&card2=575

    While a 1Gb 5770 won't be found for $20 more, just the 512Mb

Actually #1 suggested 5770 is a good deal. You can even OC the 5770 to beat or get closer tp $200 GTX 260.
However I never think SLI or Xfire is a worthy upgrade path. When you follow that path- you have to rethink if your PSU is capable of doing that..
But under clocked card can be easily OverClock it back.( just make sure the heatsink/fan can cover it..

#10 looks like you and I have different experiences. I have another 4850 with stock design, this heatsink is about 10C cooler on full load. It's the OC edition because of the heatsink. It dissipates far more heat than the stock design. The only downside is that it's double sloted. So it takes away the first pci slot. otherwise it's been great, the temp is about 10C lower on full load than stock design.

not too sure why yours would be doing worse than stock design.

#11 is correct. make sure you get a 4850 instead, and be sure it has a good heatsink. or buy my 4890 so I can get a 5870 lol

This is true but, why did they underclock it in the first place... Maybe to get by with a not as robust power section? Then when you unlock it and clock it a 600mHz that might not be a problem, but you've technically OC that card and MSI warranty is fairly "wordy" as to Limited Warranty Exclusions. It does not seem MSI likes to cater to the enthusiast market.
    http://us.msi.com/html/popup/CustService/General_war.html

As for the build quality of MSI cards, I see two totally different classes. These aren't like there Cyclone, Lighting, Hawk, Super-pipe or stuff they first release based on the original reference designs. MSI like most AIB will start re-engineering the PCB's, power sections, cooling, but to me MSI cuts too many corners and are not just non-reference cards, they are substandard. Now if you don't expect much as in OC'n they can provide through their "two-year" from DOM warranty which mean a 18-16 actual months may be all you get. They say for Third year it's "parts only" you pay repair labor and $45 return shipping, so for something like this it would never behoove you to return it.

Then even if you get a higher quality enthusiast card you get the same crap warranty, when so many other have true two year or better.
