False, almost 500 reviews averaging 4 out of 5 eggs. While I don't have the 8 port version I do have the 4. It has been flawless 24/7 for at least 3 years, probably longer.
It did run fairly hot which might account for some of the negative reviews about capacitors popping. You can fix this by popping the top off and drilling a few rows of vent holes into it.
If you have one that fails from blown capacitors, do not do as one reviewer did and buy crap low end capacitors from Radio Shack to fix it as they will fail again. Radio Shack does not sell any decent capacitors for this application (with one rare exception, "sometimes" they have a variety pack (it varies what caps are in the packs even at same store on same rack) that may have Nichicon capacitors that are decent enough, I forget the model # but they are brown with white lettering). They need to be quality (Japanese preferably) very low ESR capacitors, usually found only at professional electronics shops or online at electronics supply houses like Digikey, Mouser, Newark, etc.
Generally crappy reviews
Arrrrghh!! Why do I always see these deals AFTER I drop $50 on a 4 port switch..
