I have an older version of these and although I'd never use it for my primary wireless, they work great to have on hand when working with older machines or something that doesn't have wireless. If you put a 6' extension cable on it, they work much better.
I guess you need the cord to function like an antenna #1? Do you have any idea of what the range is on this adapter without a cord?
Poor range, not a great adapter, but for $10 it will work most of the time. I paid $20 a year or two ago for the previous version. Did not hate it but, did not like it.
The cord just allows you to place it higher, etc.
Mine is 20' as a crow flies. 3/4 connect time. The sw is very picky about how you install it. So much so that there were good sized forums devoted to it's installation and use.

I've used an older model (refurbished also) of this adapter for the last couple years. It worked fine even without the extension. Wanted to pick up another but Newegg was sold out on the WPN111NAR so I picked up the WPN111T model for the same price + free ship. Haven't lost a connection yet. For $10 it's pretty decent.
