This is how much they are in the stores!!!
This kit doesn't include the receiver that you put into your iPod.
the pedometer is off by at least 1/2-3/4 of a mile.
I looked at this for me and it had mixed reviews on Amazon. My impression was a love it or hate it. It sounded like the software for the iPod was great, but the hardware was iffy.
According to #2 (I haven't checked) this doesn't come with the receiver, which if it's true means this is only useful if you're just buying a replacement receiver.
I used to use one of these, in fact I bought a nano because of it. However, as #3 pointed out, this thing is far off by enough that the usefulness is limited. Worst of all is that the pace measured would suddenly and inexplicably drop in the middle of a run. I bit the bullet and got myself the Garmin 305. I spent $$$, but could hardly be happier. Extremely accurate.
You can't expect it to be spot on accurate right out of the box. The manual specifies a calibration procedure you should follow if you want the utmost in accuracy. I had to go through it myself and once I did it stayed very accurate. For $29 retail for the whole kit (which this is not) it's a bargain compared to the $150+ Garmin. If you want "tracked by satellites" accuracy, spend the extra dough. If you already have a Nano then this is a great affordable alternative if you follow a couple of simple calibration steps.
As for the pace getting slower in the middle of your run, perhaps you got tired like I do half way through my runs...
This seems to be just for the transmitter piece, good if the battery died on yours. Not a deal.
#6: The Garmin Forerunner 305 is so much better than this. It's like comparing wiping your ass with a cheese grater versus Charmin Ultra-Soft. I recommend the Forerunner 305 over this crap every day of the week.
sincerely,
toddsucks
#6, I thought about that too.
However, my pace would suddenly drop from 7:30/mile to say 10:00/mile and back over the course of a mile where I thought I was running a consistent pace. Those random drops really annoyed me. Then there would be times where I ran pretty slowly yet it registered a fast pace for the whole run. Good for the ego, but bad for training.
it was calibrated and used with a nano. still off by 1/2-3/4 mi.
Great, get these two together and no telling what they will try to sell you now.
The concept is great. Since most of us listen to music while running/jogging/walking, it's a no brainer to pick one of these up. Problem: the receiver's battery doesn't last long. I had mine for about 5 months before it just quit on me. I had no idea the little transmitter housed a battery. The issue with it is that once the battery dies, you have to purchase another one... you just can't replace the battery. Lame. Nike and Apple markets themselves as being a 'green' company. What a bunch of liars. When it comes to it, the money wins.
you must be kidding on this deal, $22 for the sensor????? buy.com sucks anyway, vendor of last resort.
Well #7, I would agree that the Astin Martin is a better car than a Camry; the $29 Nike+ system is the Camry, the >$150 Garmin 305 is by comparison an Astin Martin. I guess you get what you pay for. That being said, I have no issues with mine, enjoy your Garmin.
And the battery on my first unit lasted about 14 months. Rather than just buying the replacement transmitter, I spent the extra $10 and got the entire kit again. I was surprised the battery wasn't user replaceable.
#11 - It's my understanding that Apple makes the hardware here...
Well, I have been using one of these for almost a year. I find its distance measurement to be more accurate than either of my two GPS units. I base that on the fact that, when I run exactly the same course, the GPS units will report a larger day-to-day variation than this unit.
My main complaint is the ipod software. I don't listen to music, I listen to audiobooks. If anything unusual happens it is imposable to recover at the last location or start a new "book". Menus screw up and I can't select the next playlist or sometimes it won't respond to "rewind", others it jumps to the previous file. Just crappy software.
The 305 is best if you really want to keep your miles accurate. I use both. The Ipod kit is somewhat accurate but is still about a mile off on any run over 10 miles. Its a great motivation tool since you can log your miles on Nike's site and compete against other runners. The other downside is the battery in the sensor doesn't seem to last more than 6 months so save your receipt and apple will change it out. I have been through about 5 kits so far in last 2 1/2 years. Btw, these usually cost $29.00. I guess Nike is trying to get rid of them before the batteries go bad.
i used the nike+ for 2 years. yes, it's not as accurate as gps, but mine was always accurate against itself... i never calibrated mine at all, and found that when running an official 5K, my sensor said i was done 200 yards before the finish line every time. the real benefit to nike+ is that it's CHEAP and that most people are already going to carry an ipod anyhow!

>> I guess Nike is trying to get rid of them before the batteries go bad.
>>
Actually, that would be Apple who's trying to get rid of them before the batteries go bad.
Nike just makes the hole in their left shoes into which the Apple transmitter fits, and Nike also makes the Nike Plus website where you visit to see your runs, compare and compete with others, etc...
Apple = hardware
Nike = footwear + website
Please note, this is ONLY the transmitting piece that goes in your shoe. It does not include the receiver for the Nano. So, this is the normal replacement price for the transmitter ($19). Please also note: This piece eventually has to be replaced since the battery is NOT replaceable or rechargeable.
I've owned two of these and they work great, the battery does die over the span of about 1 1/2 to 2 years. I agree, their not as accurate as GPS but that's apples and oranges. Moving on, you do not have to buy a special Nike shoe to carry this unit, just put it in the laces of your current running shoe and its accurate enough for the price.
Can I make a hole for this on my Reeboks?
