The 3100 is a great option for new DSLR owners. A minor regret is the mic for video recording is mono, and there is no external mic input. A related issue is that you can hear the autofocus motor loud and clear during video. Of course, it's a camera first, and I've had fantastic luck with it and two lenses (Nikon 35mm f/1.8 and Tamron 18-200mm).
