Great camera at great price. Shipped it to DE so no Tax!
How low will these go? Every week they keep getting cheaper!
#2, there are a couple of sites selling D40 around $360. However, they are not trustworthy sources to buy camera.
My guess is that this will not go further south than 350 in ONE YEAR.
I will wait. I can't decide whether to get this or a D60 or maybe the XSi
Yeah just stay away from online stores with extremely low price on camera body/kit but outrageous price on accessories. Sonic Camera comes to mind. Reseller rating: 0.93/10.
Coupon doesn't work....and regardless I'd wait for a good deal and get the XSi.
Canon or Nikon. Coke or Pepsi. Just comes down to personal preference and what existing lenses you have. D40 is an excellent starter DSLR camera as is the Canon XSi. Once you get into the hobby though, you'll eventually want more to go with it. 18-200mm VR lens comes to mind.
Tough to shoot in very very dark conditions with the D40. Be patient, and lean up against something. D40 will only go up to ISO 1600; The last ISO is too grainy for my tastes.
Besides the up-sell from cheesy e-tailors, the main thing you need to avoid is buying a grey market camera - camera's meant for sale in a different country than your own. Nikon will NOT honor any warranty on a grey market purchase.
Well, I was looking at some Nikon "packages" deals on Ebay, they are quite cheaper than Dell, BB, CC, some are hard to believe, BUT when I look at their feedback rating, like almost 30 thousand transactions, with 99+% positive and I even looked at how much $ people spent for their "toys" , men, I'm talking about D90 is the cheapest ($1200 + )or the least that pp buy on Ebay.Anyway can anyone, especially #8 explain to me? If it "grey" market then why pp keep buying? I'm planning to buy some but still afraid, please help.
#9 - It's all about price....grey market stuff is always alot less expensive.
#9 Grey market goods are genuine goods made to sell in another country (at a much cheaper price). They are not counterfit or reburbs and they are legal to sell here in the US. In the camera and stereo markets they have been around forever.
If you're even looking at the D40x or D60, bypass them and go right to the D80 for about the same price. I mean, if you can find it for under $300, the D40 is fine (6MP CCD is good in APS-C size for ISO). But otherwise, just get the D80 and get real, "entry-level" (formerly "mid-level") dSLR features for not much more than $500.
). The D40[x]/D60 aren't even good "novice" dSLRs, and should be utterly abandoned. The D40 makes a nice "backup" for Nikon owners when found for under $300, and it's older 6MP CCD is no slouch (unfortunately, the features continue to be -- expected in the older D40, but not the newer D40[x] aka virtually rebranded as D60).
BTW, comparing the Rebel XSi to a D40[x]/D60 is like comparing a typical compact car to a Diahatsu (like a Yugo, only without the US safety minimums
And #7, "be patient, lean up against something"? Ummm, isn't that what IS/SR/VR/etc... are for? Get it! Use it! I use a constant f/2.8 (or a cheaper, constant f/4) and SR for a reason in low-light, so I don't have to jack the ISO to 3200 (and only 800). Or at least f/3.5-4.5 with IS/SR/VR with today's kit lenses.
#10, #11, the advertise (s) on Ebay AREN'T Grey market, pp spent 2 even 3K for their toys, I'm not talking about saving thousand of $, probably around 15% off typical Dell, BB, CC sale prices.
#12,it's impossible to find a D40 for <$300, even with grey stuff, get real bud.
I own a D40x, which is essentially the same as the D40. Love the camera, very easy to use. IMHO, I think it's better then the Canon line (though sports shooters love the Canon's long lenses).
Definitely avoid the "package" deals from Internet. At the very least, Google 'em for complaints, or hit Resellerratings.com
Theres no way this d40/x/d60 comes close to the feature set of the canon Xsi, or even the Xti. the autofocus is gawd aweful slow. its slower than the original canon digital rebel, and that came out in 2003.
Buy a D80 for $550 if you go Nikon for entry-level. Don't look at that crippled D40[x]/D60 non-sense.
