$499 brand new at ritzcamera + $50 giftcard
how does this compare with a 20d or 40d?

#3, WOW I've NEVER heard of that website before! Thanks for the great tip! *smirk*
#2 the 20D, 30D, 40D are on a different level than this.
Have to agree with #1, I'd buy new for not much more.
My views on the Nikon D40[x]/D60 are stated elsewhere. If you have Nikon lenses, I recommend better models. Nikon makes some outstanding models, the D300 is tops (if you have the dough) in a semi-pro, and even some used models (g, D50, D80) would be better than a D40[x] refurb.
If you don't have Nikon lenses, again, go with another Nikon model instead. Otherwise, virtually every other vendor has better features at an entry-level price. e, good (or complete) AF lens compatibility, auto-bracketing and other basic interface features standard, more AF points and intelligence, etc...
Meh... Canon XSi.
Wish this was yellow and waterproof...I keep getting bitten by barracudas...
#4, you must be new to bend...
Not a great price.
Not a bad camera. Not a great one either.
Persoanlly I like Nikons. Have 3 digital SLRs. Seems useless to buy another.
Film cameras were never upgraded as fast as these, so one lived with one for years.
i think canon is the best slr
#11...and you must think your civic is the best car too...
how many posts is this?

#11 It is a religious answer. It really depends on your investment on lens. Lens collection are easily several times of $ of a camera body.
In all honestly, the Nikon D300 is pretty damn sweet for the price -- serious Pro-level quality in a Semi-Pro package/price. But most people can't afford it. Unfortunately Nikon's entry-level options suck, and continue to be purposely crippled in many, basic features that have been standard for 3+ years in other entry-level products.
