Wasn't this model replaced by the D40x a couple years ago?
Check out dpreview.com to compare & shop. This model is in the DX format - a photochip that is 2/3rd the size of a 35mm film negative. So when the lens says, for example, 18-55, the 35mm film equivalent is 1.5(1
to 1.5(55), or 27-85 This gets awesome when you get a longer lens, like the 18-200mm lens, for an equivalent of 27-300mm. The downside is that if you are a wide angle freak, a 10mm lens ends up being around 15mm. The upside again is smaller, cheaper glass that gives you more telephoto. This particular camera (6.1 MP) has photowells that are quite a bit larger than the photowells on a 10 MP chip (same size chip, sliced into smaller holes). The upshot is reduced noise level. But then, this is the "old" CCD tech; Nikon's newer cameras use the CMOS architecture that Canon used for such a long time. This is a great DSLR, especially for the price, and you can buy nicer lenses and move up in the DX body line as money and skill permit. Recommended (but check out dpreview.com to confirm you'll like it).
Highly recommended, grab one before it is gone. kenrockwell.com loves it and so do I.
#2, it's actually less than half the size of a 35mm negative. It's 2/3 the length on each side ( 2/3 * 2/3 = 44.4%)
I've had my D40 for a long time and still love it. It's such an old model however, I'd either get a used one for a lot less or find a deal on something newer. Not a deal.
This is a good camera but a very old model. With that thought, I wonder if Best Buy still has a few 486 computers for sale.
This is a great starter DLSR. However, at $400 there are probably better deals out there.
I'd buy one over a D3000 any day.
THIS CAMERA IS GREAT BUT YOU CAN GET THE LATEST VERSION D5000 FOR ABOUT $550.
