With all the new DSLRs out there, get something better.

Got a refurbed D40x from Newegg for $279 shipped (body only) a while back (thanks Ben). It was pretty much new and works great. This kit lens is not great, and you will want more.

D40 was crippled from the start. Now it's OLD and crippled.

#4 pentax k-x w/ 18-55mm lens is available for the low $500 range. It's better in virtually every way: high ISO, mpixels, kit lens, shake reduction, video mode (if you're into it), lens compatibility...

Unless you're really in love with the Nikon lens system and know it, I can't think of any reason to go with a d40x over other entry level dslrs.

Bought a D40 about two years ago on Black Friday. It was a great deal then and has served my purposes well. Newer models have newer features, anti-shake, movie mode, etc. but I am still pleased with my D40 and the two lens I got with it. I did purchase an intelligent Nikon flash for it when Circuit City went out of business as the built-in flashes on most cameras lack the "oomph" you need in some circumstances.
