waiting for a deal on the D40x or canon's XTi
Wow, sub-$500 SLR. Less than a year ago, all SLRs are over 1G.
How does this compare to Canon's Rebel XTi ?
There's some good deals out for the XTI. Just got one for under $900 with two canon lenses, a wide/macro and a 4gb ultra III CF. very happy with the xti so far
No deal for me because you can get it cheaper at amazon.
"2.5 fps to freeze fast action movements"
LOL Ben.
Still, thanks for a good deal.
I'm guessing Nikon still makes good cameras. If that is true, this is a relatively good deal, though I prefer the Canon Rebel series and would prefer more megapixels.

Agree with #5 also no tax too in Amazon (for most of the state).
When you are setting up a shot, does the LCD display an image? I have seen an advert that suggests that an image is only displayed on the LCD only after a shot is taken.
I am debating what type of camera to get myself. I have a 35mm Nikon SLR with 6 lenses. They are AF but would not be compatible with the D40x. Also, the D40 and D80 would suffer from "zooming" when used with these lenses. Anyone have experience using older lenses on a DSLR?
Nikon over Canon for this performance
#9 - it doesn't display the image on an SLR until the picture is taken. This is true for my XTi at least. You have to look through the viewfinder and focus with the lens. It's not a point and shoot.
It's basic SLR, still a good deal. A little heavier compared to other similar SLR its size. Auto focus helps much with staggered hands to create fast and sharp picture (to not miss fast action movements..)
Actually, this camera is very light. I'm sure there is something out there that is lighter, but this is lighter than the d40x or either the canon XT or XTi.
I just did a comparison shopping spree between the d40, d40x, XT, and XTi, and I bought this Nikon. Here's why in no particular order:
- kit lens is superior to Canon's kit lens
- lighter
- takes great pictures
- is cheapest of the four
- read numerous reviews written by people who own this and also the d40x, d70, XT, or XTi and most said "I would buy the d40" for one reason or another.
This camera is pretty affordable - you can get it at fotoconnection for 439. After shooting for a couple years you might want to upgrade to the next level of bigger gun cameras.
The other options I was considering would have been to go with the XTi and a second lens (not the kit lens) - altogether that would have been about $1K - so nearly twice the price. I figure I'll use this one now and then upgrade later.
The speed on this thing is impressive...

got the xti lens kit from dell at $733 including tax and free ship haven't gotten around to playing with it.
great camera. good price and great product
Canon lenses are compatible with a Nikon camera? I guess so but, to make sure?
Canon lenses are not compatible on a Nikon
just bought this earlier today with an extra lens (55m-200mm) at crutchfield for $550 shipped
#16 - Canon lenses are NOT compatible with Nikon camera. I like Nikon better because of the lenses. It seems like Nikon has more decent lenses that are more affordable. I can use the kit lense and buy 55-200 VR.
#17, is your extra lense a VR version or the older version?
#9 Yeah, I don't know of any dSLR's that show a preview on the LCD. You don't need a dSLR if that's what you want.
