nice price
No bracketing... but for this price, this is a good deal.
The XTi is pricing down too!
I have this camera and I love it. Very nice for an entry level digital SLR.
You can save $1 by getting it from Amazon for $509.95 shipped. Yes, you're burp welcome, bitches!
I got one too. It's great.
This is an amazing camera definately worth the money
but what makes this camera better than the 8mp Canon Rebel XT for $490 at ecost?
I'll take a sub-$400 Pentax K100D kit over this any day. In-body shake reduction, bracketing (yes, you can do HDR with a $300-something), 11-point AF and a far better 18-55mm kit lens with 3.1fps.
If you're going to spend money (several thousand), can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon plus their high-end glass, especially image stablized lenses. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, Pentax, any day.
Don't know how many people I know that bought Canon and Nikon dSLR camers just so they "start up quick" to take pictures of their kids and run into shake issues as well as the IQ of their crappy "kit" lenses.
If you're going to buy Canon or Nikon, spend the money because they are great "Pro" solutions. If you want to just use your dSLR and not drop a lot of dough, Pentax (Samsung is also Pentax) is a no-brainer -- K100D on the cheap, K10D more for "experts".
Or possibly look at Sony (fka Minolta) who also had in-body stablization (and their new 12MP solution, true CMOS APS-C sized sensor looks great too -- although I'd wait until it drops under $1K).
I like Pentax too. My friend who is photographer told me that Canon's CMOS is always better than Nikon. To me, they are the same since I don't have one. However, this price looks good.
Pentax does not have a good set of long 35mm telezooms (FA/FA*), much less no APS-C sized digital (DA) telezooms yet (only the DA 50-200mm = 76.5-306mm equivalent 35mm).
They don't remotely produce as many lens per year than Canon or Nikon, and neverr will.
Pentax does not have the money to compete with Canon or Nikon's marketing.
And they share costs with Samsung (bodies, firmware) and Tarmon (lens -- new Vietnam fab).
But when you want low-cost, solid-feature sets, it's hard to beat the K100D and K10D combo.
The Pentax K100D took a lot of entry-level awards last year, and the K10D continues to dominate the "Expert" awards.
Pentax just doesn't skimp on features, and even the lowly K100D has got the superior sensory, bracketing and other feature support in comparison to other, around $500 solutions.
If you're trying to take pictures in-house, you need IS, and that means either expensive glass, or a Pentax or Sony.
Furthermore, the legacy K-mount support in the Pentax is unrivaled, with many "low-cost" Nikon models having various issues with Nikon glass.
The trade-offs with Pentax are the performance of... [Truncated]
My friend has one of these, great camera
Someone told me this thing has the zoom on the lense and basically you are stuck with it.
Nice camera, but for another $200 or so you might prefer the D40x, which gives you 10MP (lets' you crop some more). Check out staff reviews/writeups at dpreview dott kom for the Nikon D40, D40x, and the Pentax cameras mentioned here. Also, B&H rocks!!! Their stuff is never the cheapest, never the most expensive, but I trust them unreservedly.
With due respect to the Pentax crowd, I must opine that Nikon glass is very good. This 18-55 is better than Nikon's kit 18-135 lens, and compares favorably with the pro f2.8 18-55mm lens. For some lens reviews check out kenrockwell dott kom. Ken also talks at length about his theory of good pictures, with adequate disclaimers (note that Ken shoots/writes for color composition, rather than sports/action, something he notes and which you must remember). Ken also observes that while Canon is better in the lab, Nikon is better in the field for several reasons, but primarily because of Canon's horrid LCD screen that gives no indication of what you actually shot. I ended up buying into the Nikon D200, and compared walk-around shots with my friend's Canon 5D. The 5D is a great camera, and (as Ken Rockwell notes) is great for things that don't move and which are reproducable (test charts (lol), table work, some landscapes (although the sun/weather/lighting moves so you never truly get the "same" shot)). But I prefer my Nikon because of the LCD screen's true-to-view quality (as well as the smaller chip allowing the use of smaller, lighter, cheaper lenses compared to Canons). But look out when Canon puts a decent LCD on their camera (maybe a 5Ds ?) ...ymmv
#13, with all due respect, Ken can go suck my carrot. Stupid misleading burp bastard. You notice how he has a special 'left-handed' Nikon camera made just for him? on the front page and contact page too? and yeah he wears his watch backward too. Lame ass carrot sucker burp assswipe.
You want real reviews, go to fredmiranda.com, or photozone.de.
dizzymon247 are you retarded?
Great deal on this camera. I own this model and definitely love it. It's the perfect camera for someone who is getting into dSLR's and is planning on spending some $$$ on glass.
#10 doesn't know what he's talking about. IS is great if your subject is static, but it doesn't help you any when it comes to action shot.
I'm looking at either this camera or one of the Canon Digital Rebel XT cameras. This does look like a nice one, though.
God this board is really uncivil at times.
I said for people who want to shoot their kids in-the-house in lower-light than outside with a "kit" lens that is f/3.5-5.6, image stabilization matters!
Geez!
But yes, I rather tire of Nikon D200 owners suckering people into buying the Nikon D40[x]. They are not even comparable!
The features (way more features), build quality (the stainless steel body is outstanding), costs (sub-$400 and sub-$800) and "entry-level" lenses (the DA 18-55 or 16-45 plus the DA 50-200 can't be beat -- especially at today's $150 rebates for the body+lens combo) of the Pentax K100D and K10D systems are just night'n day compared to the Nikon D40 and D40x, respectively.
I am not comparing to the D200 or 5D, but the D40 and similar (although the Rebel XT[i] is far better than the D40[x] in features). And then you have to consider that you always get bracketing, in-body IS, 3.1fps and many, many other features "as standard" in the K100D/K10D products.
thanks for the info
