I think BH has this for $525 shipped as their normal price, if you'd rather use a better store. It's a great camera, and the kit lens is an inexpensive but superb general-use zoom. I took about 80 shots of the stage in a darkened auditorium at full zoom and the shots were fantastic. No flash, but at the EV 1.0 setting they turned out great.
You can basically take the same photo with a Canon, there's not much difference in the fundamental camera. The Nikon grip is way better for large hands, and the Nikon menu system absolutely rocks. The Canon's smaller grip made it awkward for me to hold, and though their menus are thorough, they're not as intuitive as the Nikon.
Battery life is just incredible. I shot over 300 shots with and without flash, and the battery was only down to 35%.
720p video, yes, but it sucks because there's no way to auto-focus while you're shooting so unless you manually focus everything or it's far enough away, the video will be blurry. The quality of the video is very good otherwise.
Picasa has support for the Nikon RAW format, so I hear.
Ben must keep a copy of each item as he keeps making the same ISO mistake. The D5000 goes to 3200 ISO (not 2300).. The D5000 has the same sensor as the D90 and above and is an excellent camera. Get a 18-200mm lens (Nikon's best, but Tamron's 18-270 is good too) and you have a very nice camera package.
#3 - sorry to disappoint you but there is no "Ben" -- the real Ben sold out to the man. The current "Ben" is either a group of low paid third world workers or a robot.

thanks for the detailed review, I wish I was in the market to purchase a DSLR

#3, the 18-200 Nikon is well over $600 on eBay or $750 new, so I'd argue it's hard to justify. Perhaps a 55-200 VR for under $200.
doesn't work with my old AF lens, pass it.
Have gotten plenty of sweet pics with this camera:
