Target has the Nintendo Deluxe 32GB Wii U Console (Black) on pre-order for $350 with free shipping. The first of the eight generation consoles, the Wii U features a gamepad with an integrated 6.2" touchscreen that allows you to play games without a TV. Scheduled for a November 18th release.
I suppose all I can play on it are the games I already own or are available?
So, if I don't have a TV, I'm buying a 6" tv for $350?
I was at target and they had these $5 cards you could buy that would guarantee you a new Wii on the release date....they had stacks of the cards...I wondered why they weren't being snapped up...now I know...$350!
Knarly - what are you on about with that rant? You seem extremely out of touch. Do you remember how much the PS3 & 360 were when they were released? How about the PS2, SNES, and heaven forbid the Saturn or 3DO?... and what are you doing looking at a gaming console if you don't have a tv, you hermit?
Speaking as a former Nintendo fanboy .. Nintendo continues to disappoint. Consoles are history. The writing is on the wall and anyone buying into these late model systems are investing in history at this point. Tablets, connected TVs and smartphones have it for the foreseeable future. And PC is a great power gaming platform now. Buy one of these consoles this season and you will be sorely disappointed.
I'm strictly speaking for myself, but I have to disagree with #5. Honestly, I just don't find tablet games fun or deep. They are just pick up and go casual games. Yes PC do have good game with great graphics if you have the hardware but the type of games on PC are too limited for my taste. You have FPS, Strategy, RPG, and more FPS. Consoles has these too but also fighting games (DOA, Tekken, etc) and hack n slash games (Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, etc) which are severely lacking on PC. As someone who has played games since Atari 2600, I've seen and played enough games through my life time and can safely say that consoles have the most variety of games thus far and they will be here to stay as long as they keep it up.
While you guys argue about the game worthiness of this console, think about this: $350 invested in 2006 in Nintendo stocks would have gained you $2600 anytime in 2007-2008 time frame after the Wii was introduced. The stock is now around $16.50 and this Wii offer is already sold out at Target. So where would your $350 take you now?
Nintendo stock in January 2006 was about $16.50. Nintendo stock today is about $16.50. Just like a video game. Lots of action, but it doesn't really get you anywhere.
Consoles for sure still have a place that these days, goes well beyond just games. My xbox 360 is a essentially Cable TV box using media center extender connected to my HTPC, plays games, streams movies from my home server, streams xfinity, Hulu, Amazon and Netflix. Tablet and phone games suffer from poor graphics and limited/poor controls for most games and small screens. Neither can compete with a console on a large screen with a nice surround sound system. Sure tablets/phones they are fun for 10-15 minutes and offer a distraction with streaming in a pinch or when on the road, but the enjoyment level is diminished. That being said, the Wii U does not interest me. The games list is small and most are rehashed games I can already get on 360, PS3 or PC. Graphics thus far are only slightly better then previous gen consoles and Nintendo cannot compare to the 360 as a entertainment Hub at this time. Not worth $350 to me, but then again 90% of my gaming is on my PC which blows any console away in terms of graphics.
It is not "sold out"; you can't buy it yet you ding dong.
Well see; nearly everyone owns a Wii and the parents I know are not going to shell out $350 for another one.
Also, my kids and their friends could care less about this new Wii. We looked at it in Target and my teen said "so what" and then saw $350 and he named off 50 other things he'd rather have than a new Wii.
I can deal with the price. It's the game titles. Will new games justify the of course better video & audio along with the secondary screen? I played the tablet games for a few weeks, a few hits came out "PVS, Angry, Water, Goo" and so on but that was fine for a few weeks. The big issue with PC's, the control interface & most people don't have a PC hooked to the TV where you can get the best audio / video experience. Yes it can be done but generally it's another computer but you are still stuck with a keyboard & a mouse.
THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS!

Waiting for the 10", 3D, 240Hz, Internet enabled version of the tablet controller. Until then, Meh.
Modern hermits have TVs. #2 is the real hermit!
