eBay with Barnes & Noble has the refurbished nook color Wi-Fi eBook Reader (BNRV200) for $109 with free shipping. Features a 7" color display with 16 million colors, Wi-Fi support, 8GB internal storage, and micro SD support.
The reviews on Amazon are more realistic, and echo similar experiences of #1.
However, If all you need is a simple Ereader that keeps a charge for a month of 30 minutes a day (or half that if using the internal lighting for night time viewing), you can't go wrong with the one I won here on Ben's giveaway.
Just keep in mind that mine is really a minimalistic ereader that has a great screen in gray-scale, with built in night-light, and has a battery that stays charged for a really long time while being used. Also very light and user friendly.
Want the bells & whistles like color, playing mp4, etc? You'll want something else.
I bought one of these refurbs about a year ago for $159, and it's been wonderful. Great tablet, and a ton of hacks available for it. My wife loves hers.
#1, you should have filed for a charge back from Amex. I agree with #3, this is a much better choice for a single core Android tablet then all those no-name-brand-Chinese craplets. Just be aware there's no camera, GPS or mic. The BT is only usable in some hacked ROMs and the range is very low.
i bought one refurb on ebay from b&n over a year ago (for $225, two days before they were reduced to $185), and immediately installed cyanogenmod on it exactly according to the cyanogenmod wiki (unooter on microsd, run clockworkmod recovery, flash cyanogenmod). been working great with no problems. battery life was a little short with cyanogenmod 7.0, but improved with 1 it's still not the greatest as not using it for a day can drain 5 to 10% of the battery, so i usually turn it off when not in use to conserve battery.
the kids play games on it and i read epubs (fbreader) and pdfs (adobe reader). i specifically got it to read pdfs as all the eink ereaders i tested (kindle, nook) sucked on anything but the most nondescript pdfs. yeah i have to turn it sideways (landscape) to read a pdf and have the text be large enough to be legible (otherwise you're constantly scrolling from side-to-side like an old fashion typewriter). a 10" would be better, but you can't get that for ~$200 (well, maybe now you can get a used 1st gen ipad for that, until it's battery fails in a year or two due to old age).
on a 3-hour flight, reading for 2 hours straight, i go from 100% down to 80%. assuming linear progression, i should get 10 hours of use, but i figure it's more like cars, the last half of your gas tank never lasts as long as your first half, so the 8 hour estimate seems correct. during the week i read it for 30 minutes to an hour each night, but i don't pay close attention to how often a recharge it (just plugging it in whenever necessary).
i rarely surf on it and never watch movies on it, so i can't comment on it from that perspective except that i still prefer surfing on a desktop/laptop, though it's doable/bearable on a 7" tablet.
For reading ebooks and watch Netflix is okay. But for gaming and browsing this tablet is slow and the whole experience is not as smooth as on an iPad. I installed cyanogenmod and overclocked it with the utility and saw little difference in performance. I would recommend paying more to get a iPad generation 1 or maybe a Nexus 7.
I ordered one in January and returned it as it was defective in early February and am still waiting for my credit on Amex. Beware!

Great device. Rootable. Have had one for over a year. Great for books, comics and Netflix.
