Anybody know where to get a cheap USB cord for the Nook Color? It seems they have a history of breaking and B&N wants too much money for one.

I've just been using a standard micro usb cable... same one that works with my phone and my Archos 43IT. Works fine with the Nook Color as well. I haven't even taken the B&N cable out of the box, but my NC is running Cynaogenmod 7.1 direct from a Sandisk microSD. Works fantastic.

Anybody compared a Nook Color to a Nook Tablet as far as using the Color as a tablet (when rooted or running Cynaogenmod from a microSD card)? $130 (+microSD) is so much easier for me to swallow spending on a tablet vs. $250...

    BenKat & AKM,

i thought i read somewhere that the b&n usb cable (& wall plug) was required to charge the nc because the nc requires more than the 0.5 amps that usb guarantees.

as "proof" (circumstantial evidence?) the micro-usb connector on the b&n cable is longer than a standard micro-usb connector. i also plugged my nc into a powered usb hub (can't remember if i used the b&n usb cable or a standard micro-usb cable) and it said it was charging, but ever so slowly (definitely not as fast as using the wall adapter).

    unsichtbaremann,

i have a nook color (nc) and plan to purchase a nook tablet (nt) as soon as there's cyanogenmod for it and b&n offers it for < $200 refurb through their ebay store. i haven't used a nt yet, but as i understand the only difference between the two is the better hardware (faster dual-core cpu, more ram, more flash). the screen is identical (at least in specs) which is what i care most about (as the hardware is sufficiently fast to read web pages and ebooks). i just figure i'll eventually find more uses for my nc and want the better hardware of the nt (and then i will have a nt for me and a nc for the family Wink).

This is the tablet to consider if your looking at those generic Chinese brands. The NT also has a mic.

With the B&N cable, it charges faster, but it'll charge just fine from a USB cable plugged in to a computer, or from a standard cell phone wall wart (how I've been charging mine). It just takes a little longer.

Mine's actually a Christmas gift for my daughter. I've loaded it up with games, coloring books, Netflix, and drawing programs, thrown some of her favorite movies (ripped to .MP4) on it, and might throw some MP3's on it also. She's been using my Archos 43IT quite a bit, so I think she'll get a real kick out of the NC. So far it's done everything I've asked of it. The only disappointments are lack of camera, lack of microphone input, and the sound isn't very good at all (not very loud). Headphones will fix the last one though.

Thanks #2. I've just read where the cable is different. Yada. I will get and try a regular micro USB. I can't manually upgrade the Nook Color without the cable and I am still waiting for the wifi upgrade. I like the fact that B&N decided to add more functionality to the Nook Color to make it more appealing. But yes adding a rooted SD card is so awesome.

OK. I found a micro USB cable from an old cell phone. Plugged into Nook Color and computer. Worked fine. Thanks guys.
