I got a Nook Color from Ebay for $20 and only slightly used. The seller had used it to scoop dog sht and the screen was cracked. The seller had used it as a cutting board for vegetables as well, but this did not diminish its usefulness in any way.

I bought a refurb, it was in perfect shape. No complaints. I can see why they have so many refurbs. You power up the Nook, see the B&N interface, and think to yourself "hey, nothing's free like in iTunes or Android Market... everything costs money. Everything, even Angry Birds. This thing is going back." I loaded it up with Cyanogenmod 7.1, a bunch of free stuff from Android Market, some movies ripped to .MP4, and gave it to my daughter for Christmas. She loves it.

I considered this and the kindle fire. I bought a refurbished 8 inch 4:3 Visio tab. Android 2.3 with the light overlay by Visio. Access to the Visio market, android market, and even the kindle android market. Has a fun camera, damn good landscape speakers for tablet, 4 GB with a 32-bit wide expansion slot, HDMI out 1920 x 1080,ambient light sensor, some kind of GPS, accelerometer, 1 GHz processor very responsive, included case. Refurbished, but I found no evidence it was not brand-new. I think with you as a ton of these lying around and they don't want to cannibalize their own sales so they let w00t sell them for $165 to the door. Same aspect ratio as an iPad -1.7"

Get it. Get a rooted SD card. Not to bad of a device. But the battery discharges a lot quicker under Android than in Nook mode. Any ideas why?

Best SD card (according to everyone at Cyanogenmod forums) is a Sandisk Class 4 of 8-32 GB capacity. Apparently the Sandisk handles block writes much faster than other manufacturer's Class 10 cards. The only thing to watch out for is counterfeit Sandisk cards... try to buy with retail (not bulk) packaging. I'm using a Sandisk card, the Nook runs just fine with it.

Things I don't like about the Nook - no camera, no microphone, and the speaker doesn't get very loud at all. Headphones necessary under many circumstances.

AKM I did the exact same thing that you did...saw the lame B&N marketplace...Moded it with Cyanogen 7, loaded it up with apps, MP4s, MP3s and gave it to my 6.5 year old for Chrsitmas and she loves it. Picked my refurb up for $119 from B&N back at the beginning of December and moded it. Once moded you can get Android Market, Amazon Market and still use B&N if you want. Cyanogen 7 is the way to go. I went ahead and flashed the Nook rom instead of putting Cyanogen on an SD Card though.

Why is the price of this thing going up? Its the previous model. it should be $119 by now. I picked one up for 129. I likes and would also like another.... but not at this price.

If your using Cyanogenmod 7.1, go to Android market and get "Nook Color Tweaks" it's free and allows you to boost your speaker volume. Works great!
