Is this really needed? I'm not over clocking my Wii, and I can't say I've ever had heat related problems with it.
My Wii gets warm when I play with it.

I got this on clearance at gamestop for $4, the thing makes the Wii as noisy as my 360, so I quit using it.

Garbage.
Not pointless. Apparently the wireless NIC heats up the GPU until it fries. You can avoid the fan if you turn off the Connect24, but not 100% completely. Also if you hack your wii, I heard you definitely need it.
