I bought 2x2gb ddr2-800 5-18-22 1.8v for $15 after rebate on Black Friday 2008 and again in April 2009. This price is ridiculous.

And nice drunk typo in the title, Ben.

Well, let's all jump in our time machines and go stock up on memory! While we're at it, we'll head back to the 50's and get some gas for 25 cents a gallon, then make a quick stop in the late 80's and gobble up some Apple stock!

Yes, the price of memory has more than doubled over the last 6 months. It has actually leveled off and is beginning to fall again. The bottom won't fall out as it did in late 2008/early 2009, but for the next four months we should see some softening of prices. Expect prices to rise again beginning in summer.

As for this deal, it would be a good deal based on today's price if there wasn't a rebate. But my point is, list a better deal *right now*, or go home.

Sure- I should go home since I stock a lot when memory price is low. I might still have 10+ set laying around.. Maybe it is time to sell at eBay Smile

You people crying about lower prices from the "old dayz" are pathetic. Get resilient and GET OVER IT!

I find it laughable that any of you paid anything for this memory considering that I got mine for FREE by traveling into the future and finding a couple of 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) chips laying around in my great-great grandchild's junk-drawer.

Time travel aside... the question is what makes memory/ram prices always swing so wildly, that's what you've all pondering.

Memory is if any thing is in the industry a staple commodity, and why do vendors Kingston, Crucial, OZC, etc have a mature product that can go from... Free to $70? It always production and demand... while in some case a price war like it was 2 years ago that's about it. Is there that much of a demand for 4Gb of DDR2... I can't really see that as the reason. Right today are that many building with it, or thinking that an upgrade of another 2Gb is worth the investment given many are probably still on 32-Bit.

It's production... Hynix and Samsung have had almost every bit of memory production for years. Although, Hynix as almost always is embroiled in a ton of business wows. As of late executives in trouble, industrial espionage,price-fixing and now they want/need to sell can't find a buyer. Then there's Elpida Memory Inc., look's to take third spot as a DRAM chipmaker and could move on Hynix with the right partnerships.

It's a turbulent time (again) in the in what should be a oh-hum commodity business and once again we pay! Crying or Very sad

Well I don't think DDR2 is going to soften up that much in the future, inasmuch as manufacturers will be switching production over to DDR3. If there is an oversupply situation in the future that causes prices to tank like a couple years ago, it will be DDR3 prices that tank, not DDR2.

Low price DDR2 memory are due to wrong estimate. Manufacture think Vista upgrade will cause a lot of memory demand. However poor economy plus poor performance of Vista cause all the upgrade delayed. So the memory is not so hot as estimated. That's why most of manufacture start dumping them to take $$ back to avoid further loss. Now those overstocked memory are gone. New DDR3 in production. Like #12 mention, you probably won't see much price drop for DDR2 memory ( just like old time DDR memory remember ? ). That's why I stock many sets and buy whenever there is a deal. And it is time to sell at ebay to profit. Smile

BTW, for this price - you can almost get 4gb DDR3 memory already...

I'm looking to build a new comp and it is pretty sad that the ram is the most expensive part now. obv not a crazy powerful build but Phenom II 550 with unlocked cores is good enough for me.
