I've got the 600W version of this power supply, and it's been working fine for me.

    #1, befriend math.

    12V * 18A = 216W
216W * 93% (typical VRM efficiency) = 200W CPU -OR- video card & hard drives.

If you are building a computer that you expect to have parts using over 200W per rail, with two rails so 400W total on 12V rail, indeed you should buy a $150 PSU instead of a $25 one.

Now for a normal user, normal system like an overclocked quad core CPU and one high end video card, this PSU is sufficient and a good deal.

It is a reasonably good quality PSU, it's two main detractions are a little higher ripple than some (which cost more, and ripple is not enough to matter), and a little higher fan noise when it gets warm.

A secondary concern is it might have a sleeve bearing fan, I can't recall but if it does then it ought to be relubed periodically or replaced. You won't do much if any better for under $30 AR.

I built a computer with this power supply recently for someone. It handles an overclocked Phenom 9950BE with ease.

The only thing I don't like about it is that there aren't a whole lot of cables. Depending on your setup, you may wind up needing to buy cable splitters or extenders.

But, 500watts is plenty for most computers.

Did you attend DeVry to gain these magical computer assembly powers?
