Newegg has the OCZ Vertex Plus OCZSSD2-1VTXPL60G 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive for $55 - $20 rebate [Exp 5/31] = $35 with free shipping. Features 180 MB/s read & 90 MB/s write speeds, up to 12,000 IOPS, and 1,500,000 MTBF hours.
damn no feedback yet. how is 60gb as the primary drive? interested to improve boot and app launch time.
This one isn't a lot faster than a 7200RPM spinner. For a little more you can buy something that reads/writes at speeds in the 500MB/s range, which can reinvigorate even an old computer.
However, this can improve battery life and shock resistance... and if you don't store videos or photo/music libraries, the size is fine.
And the price is stunning.
This should improve your boot your speed by at least 15 seconds over a 7200 rpm drive.
The sequential transfer speed (read/write) aren't what is going to reinvigorate an old computer, it's the random read/write speed that do that. This will smoke any hard drive in terms of responsiveness/feel.
If you don't believe that, you've never had the pleasure of using one. I've put one in my wife's laptop (a Vertex 3) and an original Agility in my in-law's desktop; both have been great.
#2, older pc is probably sata2 so 500MB/s is out.
OOS
don't expect it to last very long - mine died after 6 months
this one is not good. mine disfunction in about 2 months, and replaced with another one, not too much faster than a 7200RPM
